You are in the right place (DC) to do just that - get noticed. How often do you visit other cities to promote your work? Do you frequent poetry spots in your area? I used to live in Charlotte where the culture is starting to thrive. There, we supported people who look like us in poetry, music, jewelry, natural products... etc.
motifentertainment is a yahoo group established but this talented down the earth brother Nakia (sp). I used to attend some of his very first open mics. He has great energy and you might consider checking him out for some exposure to some of the people he knows.
Also check out nokturnalescape.com (Jacksonville, fl)
Author Zane started out where you are and look at her now... Keep striving and believing sistah... it will happen big for you!
    Peace
