I don't love Jane Austen. But if you do, you'll love this book. KJF brilliantly uses the Austen books and characters to craft her own modern-day story of loves and lives.

This is the best holiday book ever. You think you had a dysfunctional family? Horrible holidays? Guess again, cowboy.

When I read this book, I wrote Thomas Harris a two-sentence fan letter. He replied that "Red Dragon" is better. He's right. But this one is damn good.

I'm a huge Doyle fan (Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha is probably my favorite book of all time). Here Doyle is riffing off his theme of The Commitments as Irish as outsiders. Now he's turning his eye to the immigrants in present-day Ireland. The stories are compelling. The characters are fascinating. I only wish the book was ten times longer, so I could linger on every little bit of it.

Not much happens in the middle of nowhere. But with these characters, and the vivid location, we care anyway.

Yet another Stephen creativity-means-danger book. But who cares, it's so well done! Great characters, wonderful location, I'm happy to go along on this ride. Plus anyone that can keep me involved and happy for a zillion pages is my kind of writer.

    Rowdy in Paris

    by Tim Sandlin
    • Rated 5 stars

I'm a Sandlin fan from way back, and this is one of his best. Love Rowdy, even as we follow his improbable adventures, flying to Paris to retrieve his lost champion rodeo belt buckle (don't ask) and becoming involved with political bisexual extremists and global corporations. It all makes sense in the end, and it's very funny along the way.

It's short, but it's perfect. Exactly what it would be like if this happened to you. Love the characters, love the story, even love the blizzard. Brilliantly done.

This is a lovely book. So well written, engrossing, couldn't put it down. Characters you care deeply about, a heart-breaking story, you want desperately for it to work out all right in the end.

  • Scott Kelby's 7-Point System for Adobe Photoshop CS3 (Voices)
    • Rated 5 stars

The best Photoshop book--the one you'll actually use! Kelby has distilled Photoshop down to the seven techniques you need most, then designed a system to use them in the proper order. You practice over and over, until you thoroughly understand the techniques, and the system is second nature. Then (genius!) there's a refresher lesson at the end. If you've been away from Photoshop for weeks or months, this lesson will get you back up to speed in minutes. As with all Scott's books, this one is well-written, easy to follow, and fun.
