I enjoy historical fiction, mysteries, science-fiction, and reading books from "soon-to-be-great" authors, i.e., new voices. I have worked in various capaciites in the field of mental health for 30+ years. I'm an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church since 2002; therefore, some of the books that I read are of a theological slant. I have been... more »

Hi John, The various editions of Farmer in the Sky are all the same work and should be kept together, so I have reverted the separations that you submitted. Sorry - you obviously invested some time in this. Please keep contributing!

In fact, lightly abridged versions (not adapted, though) are combined with the original work as well.

The guidelines specifically say that it is the content of the work that should be identical not the extraneous matter that may be associated with it such as introductions, forewords, afterwords, illustrations, etc.

A thorough background and FAQ are being written. I hope to have some large pieces of that though final approval and made public next week.

A "combination" is just that - one book detail page that has on its edition tab multiple identical copies of the title.

The only editions that should be combined are those that are identical in CONTENT - doesn't matter about delivery mechanism (audio, ebook, paperback, hardback, etc) or publisher or publisher date, etc. The content is the thing by which combinations are evaluated. The only "elimination of duplicates" is found by no longer seeing those separately via the search function because they've all be put into one place - that combined book.

    Does that help at all?

One of the reasons for and benefits of the combination process is to collect duplicates so that they won't appear separately in searches. There is no way to remove any entry from the catalog.

    Does that help?

    Thanks,

    Hi,

Help me understand why you wanted some of the editions separated from Farmer in the Sky. I examined them and they are the same book. Why shouldn't they remain combined?

I rejected the requests but, perhaps, I didn't see your purpose??

Hey, John, glad you've accepted my invite. Now, I can go "snooping" thru your bookcases, and you can do the same to mine. But, I don't think I have anything on my shelves that will interest you, unless they're textbooks.

    Enjoy you're trip to Ireland.
I just finished a memoir called A Lucky Irish Lad by Kevin OHara
It's on my husbands travel plans.
Things are up in the air at the moment.
The past 5+ years we've been caregivers for my mom and I'm doing early retirement in the fall.

Hopes the Egyptian arrives for the trip.
That should be an interesting discussion.

John, I noticed your picture - with the collar and so I clicked over to your profile. I live in Valdosta and go to Christ Church!! I know some Augusta folks through Cursillo (All Jackson, Carolyn Murdoch, etc....) It is neat that I can have a "local" Shelfari friend! I keep telling people about this site, and they look at me like I have horns. Only bibliophiles seem to understand! Gotta go find RED and get dressed for Pentecost!!!

John, what are you reading now? You wrote me months ago about The Memory of Running and asked what I thought of it. I really liked it: it is quirkyand unusual. It is a book that really made me think, and one that, upon ending it I wanted everyone else to read it! My husband couldn't get into it at first, and then he was racing through it like I did!

A book I recently read that you might enjoy is The Housekeeper and the Professor. I just listed it here. Also, Little Bee, though it is really hard hitting. VERY good books, both.

    Hi John

Thank you for posting the questions for the Heresy discussion; I'm three quarters through the book and enjoying it immensely!

One small problem - you posted the questions all as replies to Erin's synopsis, which means readers can't respond directly under the individual questions, it will all just be listed at the end of the last question. Could we ask you to start a new discussion with each question as a separate reply - this would keep the topics apart and give people the chance to talk about their opinions under your original question.

I hope this won't be too much trouble, John, it's just that we've seen it in other groups that having all questions and answers in one reply is very confusing, especially if there are many contributors.

Thanks very much for your input again,
    Sabina

I think I have the first Ariana Franklin book...I need to read that. I read a couple of Laura Joh Rowland's books but the settings were just too seedy for me...the crimes tended to make me a little sick so I stopped reading them.
