I noticed that David Mitchell's "Cloud Atlas" is on your to-read list. Based on the many similar likes on our shelves, I'd highly recommend this novel. Excellent writing!

    Hey Justin,
That is the line Collins quotes at the beginning of the poem that goes by the same name as the collection. I highly recommend Collins. I was turned on to him by a poet friend of mine and have become a fan. He has a way of making you feel like he's sitting down at a table with you when you read his poetry. Have you ever checked out poets.org? It's a neat site and you can read a few poems by thousands of poets there. That's where I first read Collins' "Fishing on the Susquehanna in July." If you like that poem, you get a good idea of his style.

Hi Justin. Well, my nonfiction just popped up on the internet at The Quarterly Conversation http://www.quarterlyconversation.com. I reviewed Carlos Fuentes Happy Familes. I'll be reviewing Yiyun Li's The Vagrants for Issue 16. I don't have much fiction publicly on-line but am running a private office with the Zoetrope Virtual Studios. I've published a short story with Relief. You can google my name to get there, but you have to buy a copy. And of course, I've got a few things in the works that I hope to get out soon. I feel I'm just now recovering some mojo after grad school. Let me know where I can find some of your work. Would love to read it.

Welcome to fiction effect Justin McFarr. Your "my space" page was entertaining, particularly "literary orange." We could be Shelfari friends. We seem to have some things in common.

Hi Justin, I just finished the 4th story in BASS and posted my comments. (It was a great story, the best so far IMO.) Now I'm eager to hear your comments for the past few stories - especially #3 which confused me a little.

This weekend I'm going to start sending notes to members about this group read. We HAVE to get publicity out about it and just posting our comments obviously isn't doing enough. I can only send out 10 notes a day, though, because of the Shelfari daily limit, so sending to all 300+ members is going to take a while.

I'm also going to contact our group administrator to see if he's willing to promote me to co-administrator (which is very easy to do). I think we really need to have an active administrator for this group or it's going nowhere. What do you think?

I finished Toga Party and wrote some comments on the Short Story group. It's hard to say much, though, without giving away the ending of the story!

    Justin,

Thanks for the reminder about the 2nd story in BASS2007 - Toga Party. I am participating in a reading challenge in one of the Shelfari groups, and because of that have needed to focus my reading time on quick reading page-turners. So far, the stories in BASS2007 have been good, but not quick reading page turners :-)

However, we submitted our results for the end of a Round last night in the challenge, so before I pick up another novel, I'm reading Toga Party from BASS2007. I'm only about 5 pages in and so am still wading through all of the run-on sentences and parenthetical statements in those first few pages. I should have it finished by tonight and will post my comments then.

    Hi Justin!

Well, I finally posted my thoughts on the Short Story group about Pa's Darling. After reading your comments, I decided I wanted to re-read it before posting - and it was a crazy week so it took a while to do that. The second time around, I changed my opinion a little. I still don't think it was a very well written short story, but at least I got something out of it and it made me think. So go check out my comments! I also added a few questions on the story for others to comment about.

And.... I posted the reading schedule for the rest of the stories in BASS2007. Hope that was OK with you. Hard to believe it, but the 15th is next Monday already - almost time to read the second story.

You didn't scare me off at all. I stayed away from the thread so as not to get any preconceived ideas about the story. I am just finishing up anaother read for Brilliant Babes, and should get to the story today. At which time I will get to the discussion. Thanks for connecting. Once we have reviewed the story perhaps we can get another thread going that will keep the SS group at the top.

Justin, I accepted your friendship invite. Thanks!

And I just finished the first story in BASS 2007 and have read your commentary in the Short Stories group. However, I don't really think I can respond until after I've had my morning caffeine, so you'll see my response later in the day. I call tell you that my response won't be nearly as erudite as yours, and that I did, in essence, agree with you.

I would like to suggest that we read more than one story a month. If we only attempt one a month, we won't be done with the book until well into 2009. And until there are more of us participating, I believe we need to "top" the discussion as often as we can to let people know the group is active and get more participants. How would you feel about twice a month (say the 1st and 15th of every month) - or even (gasp) once a week?
