this has been sitting on my bookshelf gathering dust for years now, one of the purchases from a powerbooks sale i think. i picked it up recently in my quest to read all the books i own that i haven't read yet (still not doing too good... a lot more to go!).
i thought the beginning was a bit dull, but the pace picked up a few chapters in. soon enough, i was completely hooked to the story. i'm a bit biased against first person narratives because not a lot can pull it off, but pull it off it did, with flying colors. The main character Gen is full of spirit and you'll love him and will get repulsed by him quite equally. the adventure that he got entangled in was a nice mix of action, story-telling, survival in the wild, with a good portion of mythology thrown in. i think i'll keep an eye out for the next two books in this series.

really weird especially that bit about the bearded sisters but funny too. a good fusion of different fairy tales.

i enjoyed Douglas Adams's different take on the issue of conservation - not tackled as a man of science but rather as a curious observer from the sidelines suddenly thrust into the middle of things (and not always willingly).
