In choosing mysteries and thrillers to read, I favor authors who get right to capturing your attention from page one with a propulsive drama introduced early and without superfluous detail, description or character confusion--especially in the early going.
A few of my top favorites for these virtues are Michael Connolly, James Lee Burke, Carl Hiassen, James Patterson, Robert Crais, John Grisham, Steig Larsson, Harlan Coben, Josh Bazell and Joseph Wambaugh. This isn't a complete list.
It makes my day when an author writes to me with praise for my review of their book. The most recent one was from Kwei Quartey (The Wife of the Gods). All these letters can be seen on my Critical Mystery Tour website under "Plaudits." Go: http://variagate.com/criticalmysterytour.htm?Shlf
My reviews have been published in Mystery Scene Magazine, Sacramento News & Review, 9ine Magazine, Amazon, Reuters, About.com, PopMatters.com and a few more print and online outlets. Online reviewers are almost never quoted in books, but that policy has finally been broken with a quote of mine in David Fulmer's "The Fall."
I now offer critiques and possible reviews for less well-established authors from manuscripts, galleys and Kindle books as a fee-based service. Also visit my Facebook page on books: Critical Mystery Tour. "http://www.facebook.com/pages/Critical-Mystery-Tour/122414944468856"
