hmmm...its probably time I actually wrote something up here...lets see, a bit about me - I'm a (semi-reluctant) software engineer from NYC, but I enjoy working with food much more; being a chef just doesn't pay as well =) But other than cooking, may other main passion is reading.

My reading habits are somewhat...eclectic =) I'm a... more »

How interesting to find another member with Bunnicula rated high as well as Confederacy of Dunces rated highly! My question is really to get your opinion on the Barry Trotter books. I have an 11 year old avid reader. He's been thru all the HP books, read The Road and liked it, has a pretty adept sense of humor and parody but is this series still too adult? I only read a short excerpt and while his reading level in very high he's still a kid. I could like with a pg-13 rating but no higher. If you could give me your opinion I would appreciate hearing from you.

I would just like to second the last commenter's Gene Wolfe recommendation--if you're into fantasy or sci-fi at all, chances are that you'll like him. Read The Shadow of the Torturer & the Knight.

I think the only reason I've read so many so far is because I read a lot of YA books. Scott Westerfeld's stuff can be read in less than a day each.

Oh dur, we already are friends. I knew that. I blame just getting home from work and having multiple tabs open in my browser. But the recommendation for Gene Wolfe still stands!

We have over 200 books in common and you have a lot of books on my exponentially expanding TBR list. Friends?

I noticed it looks like you haven't read any Gene Wolfe, and considering a lot of the things you have on your shelf I would recommend him. The first book of my favorite series of his is called The Shadow of the Torturer. He crafts a very interesting story with a torturer as a protagonist, and it's an interesting mix of both science fiction and fantasy.

LOL I like your profile! I started cooking making mud pies when a child and I didn't have any better sense then to learn how to cook food! In my late 40's and still tied to a stove.;-)
