Nope, not any personal experience, I just find religion and sexuality to be really fascinating subjects. I'm glad to hear that you were able to break out of that kind of homophobic ideology, though. It seems like there would be a colossal amount of shame to have to work through if you were told that homosexuality was a choice or that you could be "cured."
Have you read anything by Bruce Bawer? I really loved his book Stealing Jesus. It's on how the values of evangelical Christianity radically contradict Christ's message, but Bawer himself is gay so it's written from the perspective of a gay person returning to Christianity after having been exposed to right-wing literalist strains of it. You should check it out. He also wrote one called A Place at the Table about approaching Christianity as a gay man that I assume focuses more on his personal journey but I haven't read it.
I'm not too far into Straight yet, but so far it seems to be focusing a little more on biological concepts surrounding gender, whereas I'm more interested in the psychological dynamics involved in how people "fit" or "don't fit" into certain categories of sexual orientation that society has strictly dictated for them. I'm sure it has more to say, though.
