A swedish book idiot, physical chemist and engineer in Switzerland, looking for more time to read, more books to read, more books to discover. I like the absurd, the hyperrealistic and the poetic. I don't like generic plots, one-dimensional characters or forced endings. But then again, who does ?

Jonas, I saw you added both Oryx and Crake and The Brief History of the Dead. Those are both in my top ten favorites... I can't wait to hear what you think of them!

I agree, we do need a good reason.
Uhm, thank you for the recommendation, the only problem is that I don't find it translated in Romanian. There is only "The serious game". Norwegian, Swedish and Finish books writers aren't very popular here... so I can barely find books translated and those that I find are expensive. Maybe it will be edited someday...

Well, I thought of moving away from here, but I don't know.. Sometimes I really want to get away from here...
I would probably go to Canada because I have an aunt there.

I didn't really like him because he is not in my line... "Bengal nights" is a good book and I recommend it. Eliade has many fans here.. so I guess he is a good author after all.
I'm planning to read "The red room" by Strindberg. Have you read this one?

So, are you living in Switzerland permanently?
I tend to mix cop novels with classics..I seldom read contemporary, and those are thrillers or horror. I read them only if I find the review interesting.
I can't say that Romanian literature is the best, there are just a few books that I really liked from our literature, like: "Ciuleandra" - Liviu Rebreanu, "Fiul risipitor" (the prodigal son) - Radu Tudoran, "Invitatia la vals" (invitation to the waltz) - Mihail Drumes. Of course, there are other well-known Romanian authors like: Mircea Eliade, Mihail Sadoveanu etc. Eliade is probably the most known writer from our country, I only read two books by him but I can't say that he impressed me too much.
If you ever find a Romanian book just ask me if it's worth reading it or not. ;)

    Hey!
You're welcome. Well, I didn't have time to read too much of it..So far, I find it quite interesting. Well, it's easy to read in Romanian.:P
Oh, well, Bucharest is nice... How's Basel? By the way, are you Swedish?
Ehm, first of all, you have to tell me what kind of books do you usually read before I recommend you something.

I'd love to recommend - books out of China are about China? To be honest my normal reads are non-fiction social commentaries or history on China, which tend to be relatively hard to find (i live by a fantastic academic library). I can't recommend much good fiction but I'm reading some extremely good books on Tibet right now, all of which are currently listed on my shelf. Tibet's Last Stand is the most readable, and I'd definitely recommend it.

    Hi Jonas,
thanks for the note... nice to hear from you again, and sorry this is the first time I have logged in for a very long time!
I don't blame the group for thinking that it has been abandoned, but I am happy to see that it has survived well without me... I hope to find more time in the upcoming weeks to do stuff on shelfari, and especially in the movie group... I have not forgotten it ~ but also it seems that I have lost my co-admin Ann that used to help me out when I got busy... so I will definitely take up your suggestion of finding a new co-admin, I will get onto this as soon as possible.

And hey!! Great news!! I have just heard that "The Hobbit" is going to stay in NZ after all... yay!!! Yes, it would have been terribly sad if we lost it!

Thanks again for the note, hope everything is well for you and yours too... keep in touch.

Hello, Jonas. So good to be back and find some time for shelfari again. All is well in the Philippines... what you see and hear in the news usually are over the top and sensationalism. it is still a third world country, run by corrupt politicians, but as we filipinos always tell ourselves...we did not become number 8 among the happiest people in the world for nothing. We are pretty resilient, and find joys in the simplest of things. Anyway, its the government that is poor and not the people.
Recently had to slow down on the running, I am developing a bad back (inherited as a scourge of the family), so i just climb a 12 story building everyday when I make my regular rounds of patients in the hospital where I work.
So wonderful to hear that your daughter is growing up beautifully, my son is now 13 years old, so he needs less supervision, but more of observation now that he is a teenager. he is into sports and music, less on studying....
I still do travel a lot in connection with my work, and just got back from Bali, Indonesia. So I have been reading more of travel guidebooks and lonely planet publications lately.
Still looking forward to visiting Switzerland again.
    Regards to the family.....

Hello, Jonas... just dropping by to say hello...
i had the opportunity to visit Stockholm last July..... Sweden is such a lovely country... but awfully hot, that time of year.
Been busy, and have not been reading a lot lately, however, I was forced to read "Around the World in 80 days" as part of my son's book report...had to help him with the project...
Your baby must be a lovely little girl by now.....

Hey! The Hunger Games is a great trilogy but not nearly as amazing as the Harry Potter series. I still recommend it though. I used to be against reading YA as well until I started working at the library and decided to give it a chance and discovered that there are actually some really good YA novels out there! Let me know if you decide to read The Hunger Games! Talk to you later:)

    Howdy Jonas,
Its been a busy week at work, so I'm only about 175 pages in but really enjoying it. About a year ago I saw you list the movie on a thread (movie lovers) and picked the flick up - loved it, went ahead and gave it 5 stars. So I had a pretty good idea that I would like the book. They have an October 2010 release date for a remake of the flick called Let Me In. Not sure it was necessary to remake it myself, but I'll probably like it as well - its just a great story.

Unfortunately, they are making Youth in Revolt a movie. I LOVED the book so I don't think I will see the movie - there will definitely be parts of the book that won't make it to film.

I have seen the Wrestler and did enjoy it. Will have to check out Hurt Locker. Currently, I am watching Ugly Betty - never watched it when it first came out but I have to say I am really enjoying it. I used to work in the fashion industry and some of the characters on the show are so spot on for the fashion industry types.

I am ready for the holidays. Did all my shopping on amazon. Went a bit crazy with the toys for my nephew. He is 6 and you figure he may find out the truth about Santa soon - you figure there is always that one classmate who is clued in about these matters. At the moment, Santa is still visiting this year! I will be staying home for Christmas but most likely will be flying to see my new love interest for my birthday and the New Year or he will be flying here.

I am jealous of your Paris trip. I have that on my list of places to see (eventually).

Let me know if you ever read Youth in Revolt. It is not classic literature but you will definitely get a laugh. I laughed out loud on the subway reading it. It is that funny!

Be well and enjoy the festive season!

For post apocalypic fiction, definitely read Oryx and Crake, as well as The Year of the Flood, also by Margaret Atwood. The two go hand-in-hand. The way she presents and unfolds these stories is just incredible. You might also enjoy The Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier. It's one of my all-time favorites, and also post-apocalyptic.
I haven't read The Book of Dave yet, but The Road... That book has stuck with me. It's an incredible work. If not for that tiny glimmer of hope, I wouldn't understand how anyone could stomach it. :)

Things are going alright. Went on holiday to Northern Ireland and England about a month ago. Went to my friends wedding in NI. They had a fantastic reception at a castle. It was fairy tale like. However, the fairy tale ended when I got home and back to reality. Still at the same job but just saving money now to move on as the economy is slowly picking up. Thinking about giving the UK another chance but this time moving to England. Not sure yet but got the itch to move. Pondering Chicago too - talk about being confused!

As for books... I LOVE Youth in Revolt by C.D. Payne. If you want a good laugh, check that out. I also liked Been Down So Long Looks Like Up to Me by Richard Farina, anything Jerzy Kosinski and Zeno's Conscience by Italo Svevo. I also like Ivan Klima but you know how I like my Eastern European authors.

Seen any good movies lately? I watched Pan's Labyrinth again, the Visitor and now in the middle of March of the Penguins. Checked out Let the Right One In - enjoyed that one too. Hope all is well. Are you ready for the holidays?!
