I love Frederik Pohl right now.

I remember the first time I distinctly read scifi. I had stolen a book from my friend, okay, he didnt' want it anymore. It was a book of scifi stories by Asimov. One story there was about a time when people learned their knowledge from tapes. There was one guy who kept on flunking all the exams so he got depressed. In the end he found out there were those who learned from tapes and those who made them...

Another short story was about this guy with a statue. Just like the one it Harvard, this statue had three dates. Unlike the one in Harvard, it was the three dates, the man with the statue went to jail. Anyway, as the story unfolds you meet two characters, the "hero" and his antagonist. In the end, however, you find out it is through the antagonist's deliberate Machiavellian ways, that the Earth survives and the "hero" gets all the glory. And the antagonist says in the end, "There will be no statues built for me..."

These two stories changed my life and I think I subconsciously live by them. « less
