She was still sobbing when the bed shifted as some weight settled in. She stiffened and started to open her mouth to scream for help when an achingly familiar voice whispered, "Ssshh... It's me. Why are you here?"
In response, she hugged him to her, still crying, her shoulders shaking with the release of pent-up emotions coming from deep within her. His own eyes misted, for he knew just how much he'd been hurting her. "I'm sorry," he rasped, his voice ragged with emotions, pulling her tighter to him, as if by holding her closer he could lessen her pain. "I'm so sorry."
While she cried, he held her, silently offering her comfort just by being there and by whispering sweet nothings to her. When at last the flood of emotions has finished, she wiped her face and hiccuped, tired now. She sought comfort in his arms, and in that moment, the love that she'd been feeling for him burst within her. She realized just how unfair all of these were to him, and how deeply she'd wronged him. She also realized just how selfish she'd been all of these years. Tears started falling from her eyes again as she admitted to herself that she loved him too much, and that what she wanted most was for him to be happy. She knew that she loved him enough to finally let him go if it meant making him happy - even if it meant breaking her heart. Swallowing past the lump of misery in her throat, knowing that these would be their last moments together, she whispered, "I love you, now and forever, once and always."
She thought that he was asleep by then and that he didn't hear her. But he did. And the tears that he'd been trying hard not to shed finally fell....
