I'm an American living on a small fishing island in Canada. My interests and education have danced around the fields of psychology, philosophy, literature, and theology. I love friendships that are deeply personal, my husband's crazy optimism, drinking coffee, hiking, watching the Atlantic ocean, watching movies, and reading a good book.

Hey Thanks Jo! I love seeing your fb status here and there, although it probably gives us all a false sense of being friends when there's no real contact. Read your teen survey note the other day and loved your thoughts on forgiveness/not forgetting... enabling injustice, it was very well said and was a very needed reminder to me at just the right time, been chewing on it for a few days! If you're ever back to Iowa sometime I would love to visit with you, we have plenty of room to host as well. I still wish we could have made your wedding, we would have loved to have traveled out there, just Doug & I but that of course was the year I was pregnant and due that December! 2010 is going very well by the way, I've had an outstanding last 8 months or so ever since we got moved and all back in one place. I'm starting to think we just might really be over some of the big bumps we've had along the way.

Welcome to 1001 books. You can keep track of the books you have read from the book, 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, join in the discussions on the books we are reading for the month (BOTM) or you can debate the merits of the list as some enjoy doing. We hope you will want to join in the choosing of BOTM and the discussions. The current books are pinned to the top for that month. There are older discussions that can be found by searching discussions. If there is any way the group administrator can help further feel free to ask one of us. If you don’t own the book the list can be found at the top in the group description or at http://www.listology.com/content_show.cfm?content_id=22845. A downloadable list of the second edition is available at http://johnandsheena.co.uk/books/?

    Greetings Jo,
I think we would be good friends if we lived near one another. We share many of the same interests. I'm not so good at small talk; I prefer to probe someone's mind for the deeper thoughts and, hopefully, have something to share.

Stalin was as bad, or even worse, than Hitler. If you ever want to read about the resilient spirit of a human being, read Leningrad. You'll find it on my shelf under the tag Hitler/Stalin. The people were incredible during the German seige against their city. Starving and greatly weakened the artists and musicians continued on with their efforts to uplift humanity with their singular talents. There is a pen and ink sketch of a woman dragging her cello to a place where all of the musicians were gathering in Leningrad to put on a performance. Jo, these people were so very weak they could barely walk but they played in the theatre and continued to share all of themselves. Amazing. Leningrad was sort of the Greenwich Village of Russia. The city was filled with people of the arts community.

It was Hitler's intentioin to starve the people of Leningrad. He actually had analysists figure out how long it would take the people to die from starvation. At any time he could have entered the city and destroyed it but he preferred this diabolical means of death for these people. Thankfully, they were saved. But many died.

Right now I'm reading The Year the Dream Died. It is about all of the political and social happenings in the US during the year 1968. Very interesting!
    Cheers,
    Caryn

    Greetings Jo,
I'm so sorry I haven't gotten back to you. I've been very busy doing a writing assignment. Of course, I accept your friendship. What are you reading now? I've begun reading Hitler's autobiography - what a crazed and evil man!

Jo, thanks so much for your kind note. I'm delighted to know you enjoyed To Dance in the Desert.

My next book, The Feast of Saint Bertie, comes out on September 1st, just three weeks from now! If you'd like to read the first chapter, you'll find it on my website, www.kathleenpopa.com. While you're there, if you sign up for my (ever so occasional) newsletter, I'll send you the announcement when it comes out, and let you know about a special "buy a book, get one free" promotion.

You have a great bookshelf, by the way. I'm so proud to see my book there.

    God bless you!
