  • Moving from Fear to Freedom: A Woman's Guide to Peace in Every Situation
    • Rated 4 stars

In dealing with many ears common to women, Moving from Fear to Faith reveals that A) we're not alone or unnatural in our ears, and B) the God of the Bible can turn them into dependence on His love and sustaining grace i we'll face them with Him and cling to His promises. For a more detailed review, see the reviews page on my blog.

  • Deadman Switch

    by Timothy Zahn
    • Rated 4 stars

Timothy Zahn knows how to construct complicated, attention-holding plots, and he has a keen understanding of motivations and behaviour.

I enjoyed Deadman Switch, particularly the plot twists that just kept coming.

The protagonist is a man of faith, working in circles where that isn't understood or liked. I appreciated the way Mr. Zahn portrayed this man -- no kooky stereotypes, no preaching, just a human being trying to walk by what he believes, in the middle of a hostile environment.

This is shaping into a really interesting series. I have more questions now than I did after book one, and look forward to reading the next books.

  • Roughing It in the Bush (A Norton Critical Edition)
    • Rated 2 stars

My rating is based on my personal enjoyment of this book, so if you loved it, just assume I didn't "get" it. It was an interesting book, but such a long read that I wish I'd given in to the temptation to skim it or put it down. There are some pretty word pictures, and it was certainly enlightening, although since it was organized in vignettes, there were times it deviated from straight linear chronology. My thought was that reading an older book would force me to slow down and savour the language. I guess I'm too much a child of my times. Give me faster-paced, tighter writing with less passive and formal structure, and with less narrative comment.

I'm enjoying this series. It's fast-moving, there are some really clever lines, and it's interesting to see the interplay between the "self-first" approach of Jack's Uncle Virge and the "noble warrior" approach of Draycos.

In Battle for the Soul of Canada Rev. Ed Hird pairs readings from 1 & 2 Timothy with historical and cultural vignettes in a series of messages challenging us with the importance of raising up the emerging generation of Christian leaders in Canada.

Ed writes, “the key to renewing the soul of Canada — and the heart of this book — is to be found in raising up Timothys”. And that’s exactly what Battle for the Soul of Canada sets out to equip us to do.

Each chapter is short and informative. There’s also a companion study guide available, Seeking God’s Solution for a Spirit-Filled Canada, at spiritfilledcanada.blogspot.com.

Parents and grandparents will enjoy reading these whimsical tales of Nancy Newt, Frankie Frog, Cecil Snake and friends to kids aged 6-10. Each story concludes with a Bible reference and conversation-starting questions to help children explore the characters' examples.

I'm glad there are more in this series. Jack and the K'da poet warrior are a great team and I look forward to seeing their partnership develop.

  • The Rest of God: Restoring Your Soul by Restoring Sabbath
    • Rated 5 stars

Rest is something too many of us have forgotten how to do. We can do "lazy" or "sleep" but "rest" as in "find restoration in God"? Canadian Author Mark Buchanan writes beautifully, and this is a book I'll read again every few years because I need its message.

Some books on rest and Sabbath are full of rules and guilt. Not this one! It offers hope.
