I was dying to learn to read before age 4 but had to be taught at age 5 through a direct instruction, phonics based method. As much as I wanted to, I just wasn't one of those prodigies who learned by osmosis. Mom, Dad, and Brother were all quietly reading around the house and I couldn't read yet. I picked it up immediately and easily once the... more »

Welcome to 1001 books. You can keep track of the books you have read from the book, 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die here and join in the discussions on the books we are reading for the month (from the book) or you can argue the merits of the list as some enjoy doing. We hope you will want to join in our discussions. The current books are at the top of the list for that month. If there is any way I or Mossflower can answer your questions about the group or about Shelfari, let us know.
If you don’t own the book the list can be found http://www.listology.com/content_show.cfm?content_id=22845. A downloadable list of the second edition is available at http://johnandsheena.co.uk/books/?page_id=160.

I agree with you about the age thing. I am 50 (49--- "but who cares about that" as Olive might say )--- and this book and this character struck a chord with me as well. The multigenerational perspectives were so seamless and alllowed a sense of intimacy with each person, making each perspective ring true regardless of the situation. I loved this book--- and am mulling it over and over days after I've put it down and picked up the next one.

Your son has settled in Oregon? Had he moved up there before you went north? How close are you to him now? I was thinking that maybe you were interested in those books because you'd become a grammaw.

Thank you for the suggestion! I'm semi-reading Part-time Indian right now (it's the book in the car that I take to appts. and other places where I have snippets of time to read) -- love it! I just got done with Little Bee, a beautifully written book, but a bit to heavy (one of those "where's the razor blade?" books). You are so good about keeping up with Shelfari! I'm about 50 books behind... :)

Thanks for the tip to join! I have no idea how much I'll use it also - but would much rather spend computer time looking for great books than answering email...which by the way, I see you are doing on vacation! Enjoy your waves.

Please do. I would be interested to see what you have not read. Dewi has read most of them. TURKEY!!! I think she only has 20 to go and has everyone at her college comparing notes on the list. It's posted on her office door. Let me know when you get it. I am still finishing up Huck Finn. I actually did my Graduate Degree in Mark Twain and am now wondering WHY!?? Ahhhhh!!!

I found you!!! I have been a member for a while. I import my shelf to my blog where I am working on reading through the list of 100 great novels!! I am currently RE-reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which I did part of my Master's degree on. Good Morning Jan,
I had to write you back as soon as I read your note this morning. I smiled when I read that you also get up early and slide into the computer chair with a cup of coffee in hand! That is exactly what I do as well! Of course, I don't have the Pacific Ocean at my doorstep. Your home sounds so wonderful that I can see why you don't travel much!!! What a peaceful place to live!

We traveled to northern California a few summers ago. We had been to the Napa Valley so we headed further north into the Russian River area and further up to see some beautiful redwoods. Of course, we didn't get as far north as where you live, but we long to do that since we got a little taste of it on that trip. I can't imagine how wonderful it must be to live up there.

I have heard of Powells Books on this site. I would absolutely love to go there, and you are SO LUCKY to have connections. Wondering if your son loves books like you do, or did he just happen to land a job there? In my "next life" (grin), I want to come back as a bookstore employee or, better yet I think, a librarian.

It is wonderful to make an online friend who loves books and is at a similar place in life's journey.

Do you have big Thanksgiving plans?

    Jan,
I am enjoying getting to know you too. Nice to know someone who "knows" Elizabeth George. I learned about her from a friend of mine who, like you, is in education - principal of a school, just retired. She is a big fan. In fact, I was talking to her just last night and she gave me the name of Peter Robinson, who is another author of British mysteries, but is Canadian. She says her book club friends recommened him and she is devouring each one of his books now.

I think I liked Ketchikan the best. We didn't go to Skagway. We went to Sitka instead. The port towns seemed sort of all alike to me. I loved seeing the salmon swim. That was truly amazing.

The problem with Vancouver was that it was simply crammed with highrise condos everywhere. We took a bus tour and the guide really had to work to point out interesting things. Of course, Stanley Park was pretty, but did not seem to be different from any other large city park In fact, Chicago has more "charm"! Of course, we love to travel, and every place we go expands our horizons, so I am very glad we got to see Vancouver. Will be fun when the Olympics are there.

I am the operations manager of a multistate home care company. I am a nurse, but am now in administration. Our offices are located all through GA and SC, and I help in FL, TN and AL as well. The job keeps me traveling which I love. My husband also travels, so we get to rack up the Hilton points. This is extremely valuable for our personal hotel stays!

I have two children. Brian is 26 and lives in Cincinnati, OH. Has a masters degree in sports management and is desparately looking for work. The economy is awful for new grads. Fortunately, he is an excellent soccer referee and has enough money coming in. Brett is 23 and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in NY last spring. He is working at a fine dining place here in Valdosta and trying to decide what he wants to do next.

I'm off to shower or I will never get to work this morning! I am not traveling until after Thanksgiving, and I am so excited about that!

I am cooking for lots of friends for Thanksgiving (well....Brett will be a big part of that!). What are you doing for the holiday?
