I am looking for great books in genres uncommon to me and authors I have never read... RECOMMEND, PEOPLE, RECOMMEND!!

The things I like best from a book...
characters and locations that come to life
characters and plots who make religious or social commentary

Things I normally don't like from a book...
over-preachiness or sickly-sweet idealism
characters who do not break stereotypes or grow during the course of the story yet pay no price for it.
