    Yes, it's about his lineage. Apparently his parents aren't who we think they are. I suspect, based on looking for clues in book two, that he may be related to Dany.

    I felt the same. I found myself really disliking Anna, which is difficult because you know you're *supposed* to sympathize, or empathize, or something, to her situation. Her life forced on her without love. Karenin was one of the few redeeming male characters in the book.
