“This was such a long, hard journey of a book accompanying Tully as she tries desperately not to feel anything, not to have children or fall in love but along the way somehow finds herself in love with her husband, her child, her lover, her lover’s child, her house, her home and her life.
The ending was a good one, but not the best outcome for everyone. Someone had to be sacrificed and perhaps it was the only possible ending after a lifetime of Tully steeling herself.
Feeling unloved and uncared for as a child and having been neglected and abused, Tully finds two friends she counts on for the security of a home and family. Jennifer is an only child and is doted upon by her parents. Julie comes from a large and loving family. They serve as examples to Tully as to how a family should be.
By high school there are secrets between them. Jennifer is crazy in love with the star of the football team but tells no one. Tully has spent three years away from her friends while she goes out dancing at night. Something will happen that will separate the trio of friends.
In the ensuing years Tully somehow survives and life goes on. People seem to admire and like Tully but she is so busy trying not to live her life, that she doesn’t notice that nearly everyone adores her.
The story of Tully finally finding her way is a long, hard one. It seems as if nothing in her life has been easy and Tully wants everything. She has a husband who adores her and gives her everything she could ever want. She has a lover who is able to make Tully fall in love for the first time in her life. How can she possibly choose between them? Frustrating at times but fascinating nonetheless.”
