“I had honestly lost hope for Chuck Palahniuk after his last few books. But he has redeemed himself in my eyes with Pygmy. At first I was completely confused and frustrated with the language and the way the book was written, but after you get use to it it becomes easy. One thing to remeber, he uses 3 - 4 words to describe something as simple as "backpack". But what he is talking about is usually made pretty clear.
Do not attempt to read this book with music on because it demands your full and undivided attention! I read this book in about 3 sittings. Once you figure out the language if you take a break and come back a day later, you have to re learn how to read this book alllll over again!! And chapters switch back and forth between Pygmy's current reality with his host family, and his past at the terrorist training academy.
But, in general the book was typical Chuck Palahniuk. Messed up characters leading messed up lives. You never find out exactly what nationality he is. But every chapter has a quote theme from people like Hitler, Mussolini, Che Guevera and a lot of other crazy dictators. Pygmy finds these people as hereos and can quote them out of thin air. I was hoping for a better ending though. It was all nice and heroic. I wasn't impressed. But getting to the end was a very enjoyable rollercoaster. Nothing has ever compared to Invisible Monsters to me, but this one is coming in a close second or third. Definietly deserves a re-read... Will probably get even more out of it! ”
