Beautiful story about the human spirit. I recommended watching the movie, too! A work of art.

good, fast read. if you're into memoirs about growing up in a disfunctional family, this is for you. Similar to Glass Castles, which I also enjoyed.

  • The Architecture Reader: Essential Writings from Vitruvius to the Present
    • Rated 5 stars

This is a must have for any architecture junkie! The book consists of essays from Vitruvious, Palladio, Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Rem Koohaas, Walter Gropius, Norman Foster, and Frank Gehry, to name a few. The most entertaining of all is Adolf Loos's essay on Crime and Ornamentation. Can't recommend it enough!

  • Chopin in Paris: The Life and Times of the Romantic Composer
    • Rated 3 stars

I am still reading this book (I'm a little more than half way through). The author obviously did a lot of research and I am learning things about Chopin that I had not read any other biography about him. But the organization is really bad. Information is repeated often and the timeline is all over the place. There is a chapter about George Sand that I thought was well written and very informative. This chapter was far superior to some books devoted to her life. I would have given this a higher rating if it were better organized.

  • Raw Spirit (Raw Spirit: What The Raw Food Advocates Don't Preach)
    • Rated 4 stars

A must read for all raw foodists. It's short and sweet, has some faults (such as grammar), but look beyond that and there's a good message.

Interesting read. I had no idea how uncouth chimps really are. They remind me of some of my relatives.

  • Thirteen Days: A Memoir of the Cuban Missile Crisis
    • Rated 4 stars

This book was written the summer before Bobby Kennedy was assignated. It's a first draft copy based on his personal journal and recollections. Had he had the time to fine tune the copy a little more, I probably would have given this book five stars. Reading this book will definitely drive home the point how important it is that the presidential cabinet is made up not just of brilliant minds but of differing opinions as well. As Kennedy puts it in his book, had any one of half a dozen people in that room had it their way, the outcome of the Cuban Missle Crisis would have been much different.

I know this was a big seller, but it left me flat. The characters weren't believable to me.

  • Green for Life

An interesting read. After reading this book I have a lot more respect for leafy greens, which Boutenko says should be classified within a food group of its own and not as a vegetable. Also, for soil and organic farming.
