Jeremiah, this is an amazing, very poignant, coming-of-age story I think you would really enjoy: "The Highest Tide" by Jim Lynch is one of the best, funniest, YA adventure stories I've read in years. It is hilarious and brilliantly written and is the debut novel by Lynch who has an amazing imagination that should propel him to the top of the literary charts. Truly exceptional writing and pacing with major laugh-out-loud situations that will have you guffawing with each recollection. What a wonderful way to start the year...5+ stars!!!

Ok, that's odd - - the brackets I used are the little triangular shaped ones that are to the left of the question mark on the keyboard. Not sure why they look square below.

    Hi Jeremiah,

To do a strikethrough, follow the instructions below.

If you want to strikethrough your titles as you go, the html code is [*strike*]text you want to strikethrough[/*strike*] . . .but you must remove the asterisks!

I posted these at the top of the thread as well. Nicole answered you, but I deleted your question and the reply in favor of sharing the info with everyone in the intro.

Oh, no worries, and I'm sorry to confuse you! I started following you after I noticed I hadn't been previously (right around the time I posted those notes earlier). Anyway, glad to know it's showing up now, so if/when you get a chance to choose another author (and if you keep signing up, you will get to choose, since you probably noticed that not a lot of people sign up each month).

And Merry Christmas! I'm heading "home" tomorrow to spend the holidays with my parents.

Ack! Well, you can maybe strike all I just said about sending private messages! I guess I wasn't following you! I thought we must have been friends from ages ago, since I was able to send you a p.m. That's probably why you couldn't send me one directly - although replying to my p.m. should have worked (although you did say it's your wife's email, so maybe you aren't comfortable with that). Anyway, my apologies, I was thinking you'd been away from shelfari for a while and they'd changed p.m.ing, and you weren't sure where to find the link to do that. I think it's just because I wasn't following you. Sorry!

Thanks, Jeremiah! We'll go with Carl Hiaasen, then, as we did Roald Dahl earlier this year.

I've started posting a note on everyone's profile (for Author Author purposes, anyway!) whenever I send a private message because I have had a couple disappear into thin air! I think it's only happened with a couple of people (one of those people, fairly regularly, though that was probably at least a year ago... though the disappearing message for the other person wasn't all that long ago).

If you wanted to know for future reference, you can reply from your email to a private message (but be warned that that will reveal your email address that you are replying from). Alternately, you can always go to the person's profile and in the top right corner, there are a few options, one is to send a p.m. (although this, too, will reveal your email address, if that person chooses to reply to your p.m.). Hope that helps!

Jeremiah, I think you would really enjoy "Hostage Zero," "No Mercy," Scott Free," and "Nathan's Run" by John Gilstrap. Gilstrap is one of the most ardent child advocates writing today. Also, "Tales of the Dying Earth" by Jack Vance is perhaps the quintessential collection of sci/fi fantasy/adventure stories ever written by one of the most revered and awarded authors to write in this genre. The words that come to mind when trying to describe his incredible achievement are: wondrous, magnificent, epic, spellbinding, dazzling, exquisite, inventive, wordsmithery, magical, elegant, enthralling, engrossing, imaginative, original, mellifluous pacing, atmospheric backdrops, transformational, fantastical storylines! I read the first story in this collection when i was 11 years old and the others in the ensuing years. Over the years I have read the collection over 20 times, each time reflecting on the joy it brings me and its life changing impact on my love for reading. Just imagine being able to transform written words from your minds eye into life-like visions and you will then understand the sensual impact of Jack Vance's brilliance! Ironically, because of its unique qualities I have always been protective and therefore reluctant to expose this truly fabulous literary experience to others for fear of diminishing its value to me...a misguided supposition I know, but true never-the-less. So, if you want to share my journey into the unknown and wander through the beautiful worlds imagined by a master scribe then you will read this incredible collection of stories and revel in their beatific perfection. Storytelling at its best; a masterpiece (recommended for advanced readers)...

    Hi Jeremiah,
I am back from hiatus. Last year was really something. My daughter graduated from High School and is in college. I took an English class at the community college whereupon I wrote easily 10,000 words spread out over several essays. I finished my English requirement and now have started on the math requirement....my only one left before I go on to San Francisco State. I think I may have about 30 more units to do total for by BA/BS.

Anyway, did you get your girl or are you hoping to get a girl?

Jeremiah, I'm so sorry I put the wrong name down. I have changed it. I guess I had Jim on my mind. I don't know what happened to him. I know you have worked hard and have done a lot better job than I did. I hope you will continue to make comments on the site. I will continue to read your Tues on your blog. I enjoy it very much. My vision is very poor and I'm on a lot of meds. I hope you will forgive me and know how grateful I am for the work you have done on the group. Doylene
