“I was mildly entertained by this book, but see a lot of potential in this writer. This was the first book I've read by Matthew Reilly. The plot was well thought out and his writing style is pretty decent. The fast-paced story kept you turning pages. The downside was how the main character (with no military training or any type of heroic experience) was doing feats that far extended an Indiana Jones character (or any normal human). It really ruined the book for me. Other things that bothered me were many cases where the author felt he needed to "show off" his research where clearly not needed. I'm glad he did thorough research (the sign of a good author), but when he repeated had the main character describe in detail every weapon he saw (which had no point to the story) it just felt like the author was trying to relay his research he had done.
I don't want to dismiss this author yet, since it was the first book I've read by him (and was dated 8 years before now). I'm hoping that he learned from mistakes like explained above. It's obvious he has a lot of talent waiting to burst forth and start writing more exciting novels similar to someone like James Rollins. I'll try reading one of his later works before I make final judgment.”
