I teach high school English in Western, New York. Prior to August 2007, my Shelfari was a list books that influenced me significantly at one time or another. Those titles span quite a few years, but currently my shelf is a record of what I am reading.

Fast-paced and real with just the right balance of action and reflection. This will be near the top of my list to recommend to high-school-age reluctant readers.

    Thought-provoking, action-packed, and unpredictable. A great read!

Parker gets stuck on Maggie's story in the middle of the novel, but the sections on Theodosia are imaginative.

The Spellmans put the D in dysfunctional family. If you are willing to suspend reality for a bit, this is an entertaining story.

One of the best books I've read in a long time. Obreht weaves together the fractured history, religion, culture and politics of the Balkans without taking sides. Moreover, she does through a beautifully written, imaginative tale told from the point of view of two equally credible generation-spanning narrators, Natalia and her grandfather. I was sorry to finish this book.

  • I Am Number Four

The two best things about this book were Bernie Kosar and the friendship between John and Sam. Otherwise the story is predictable.

This book should come with a box of tissues. Deeper than I expected.

    Macbeth

    by William Shakespeare
    • Rated 4 stars

This is a solid modern English version of Macbeth. I was initially very leery about reading a "translated" text with my students, but the editors did a good job staying true to the original text. In some passages, they were even able to retain the meter and verse.

  • Where Men Win Glory

This book should be required reading of every citizen of U.S., especially anyone interested in joining the armed forces. But be forewarned: it will piss you off.

I really, really enjoyed reading this book. Pirsig's ideas are spot on, especially with respect to his ideas about morality (seeing good in Lila) and the shortcomings of trying to evaluate everything through the lens of scientific inquiry. If I have one complaint about this book, it's that the character of Lila never seemed to be completely developed. But that too might be telling--we don't understand Lila, yet must accept her value alongside those characters whose motives are more like our own.
