I am a high school English teacher in Western New York. This began as a list books have influenced me significantly at one time or another, as well as an homage to certain memorable characters (Opus and Calvin). But that made for a rather static list, because how often do read something that influences you significantly, or meet a character you... more »

Doctorow's voice was captivating. I didn't want to put the book down. He used the element of suspense quite well between chapters, and the plot thickened as the book went on. I liked the creation and use of the Xnet and how it bled through the entire story. I liked the "stick it to the man" fight for freedom. I found the character of Marcus/W1n5t0n/M1k3y to be believable; I saw a lot of my past students in him: the rebel, the geek, the loyal friend. It was ok. :)

I have been trying to do as much rec reading as my school work will allow. I will have to tell you all about it when I come in again. I have off from February 28-March 8. I plan to come at least once that week if its ok with you. Just email me what blocks you are free or after school meetings if possible so i can most effectivly plan. Hope to talk to you soon. [3 always, M

Oh no! I'm sorry your trip is canceled... perhaps you can take some local 1-day adventures that don't require climbing? I am planning an "adventure" to the Baltimore City central library branch this week. :)

Hi Jeanne! Sorry to hear about your injury - hope it's better for your upcoming adventure (or maybe your adventure already started...?). I am actually reading a trashy beach-type book, but it's quite good though not what I expected: "How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls" by Zoey Dean. It would appeal to writers, people who like to observe others, etc. - it's just trashy enough where I can stand it and I don't want to put it down. :) Or, try one of my fav non fic choices from the past year, "Inside Mrs. B's Classroom" - hilarious but a bit sad, too. Stay cool!

    Hello!

When I saw the book The Minds of Boys on your bookshelf, I thought it might be worth checking out. Since I am planning on being a high school teacher, this book may be a help to me in the future. I might even find out something that I didn't realize about myself!

    Good Morning Jeannes,
I find you have a very interesting group of books, some I would read, yet still interesting none the less. Myself, I generally read books that leave
me with something. Something....That's why, if ever, have a read a romance
novel. I like real stories, books on History, you know? your story, history, My story, our -story....I consider myself an Our-storian! But more about that later. I have posted a request for friendship. I pray that you accept me.

    JASS!

What did you think of The Bell Jar because I am considering reading it but I don't know if I will like it. You are usually a pretty good judge of the "character" of a book, so if you could get back to me soon that would be great.

By the way, what did you think of The Bell Jar?
I found it depressing...much like the life of Sylvia Plathe.

Interesting! I've never heard of that book. I'll have to look into it!
I am reading The Memory Keeper's Daughter. So far it's very good.
I am very busy right now so I am appreciating that it's quick and easy.
    What do you teach?
I substitute taught high school Spanish this week.

If you want to read the gossip girl books then you should start at number one but you really dont have to, you might just not get litlle things they say in the other books.
