Thought I would like this but I remained detached throughout the whole book not caring whether the main characters lived or died.
It's full of characters who are outstanding in their fields, phyically perfect and hard to like.
Did finish the book but was tempted to give up several times along the way.

The plot chugs along well, it's clearly well researched, there's plenty of mystery and adventure and the characters are fleshed out nicely and are believable - oh, except for the redheaded, strong-willed irishwoman who knows how to handle a gun (from Belfast, of course) cliche anyone?.
From then on, it goes downhill. the ending seems messy and frankly quite hurried and with each page it becomes increasingly ridiculous to be honest - the 'serious' start gives way to sheer fantasy.

The story is one of family conflict and deceit. The story delves into the lives of a family and close friends who one evening are bought together when a incident occurs which is covered up. Someone has to shoulder the blame and the story revolves around the consequences of the cover up and the wrongful accusation of a young family friend and how that affects not just his life but those of the family.

aving read his last two books I was excited to read this, his latest book. However, in my opinion this book does not live up to the rest.

It starts well with an archaeological discovery in a french cave which is hushed up and an english journalist/photographer getting involved in some work with a UN investigation into the Khymer Rouge in Laos to 'get his break'. Similar to his last book the two eventaully meet up and end up working together. It is laced with the more gruesome aspects of human nature which I expect from this author, but is not backed up by any substance.

. A truly compelling novel about incest, Greek history, the American Dream and hermaphroditism, the story is enchanting from the very first page. Intellectual, but not intimidating, funny, but never punny, this is a book as deep as it is long. The author, Jeffrey Eugenides, writes in such a guileless, uncynical and effortless way that you fall in love with his characters and find yourself understanding and accepting their sometimes morally dubious decisions

Fascinating and gripping race through the Basque Country.I didn't know anything about the Cagots before reading the book and was interested immediately in this unique race of people.Exploring the genetics made it very topical.I found the characters interesting and fairly believable, although Miguel was rather extreme

  • A Visit from the Goon Squad
    • Rated 4 stars

While A Visit From The Goon Squad is brilliantly and tightly written, it is difficult to keep up with the changing time frames and shifting perspectives in each chapter.
The book paints a rather depressing picture of modern America - of broken relationships and shattered lives. The disconnected narrative reflects the breakdown of family ties within the novel, but such disjointed narrative can be difficult to follow without some chronological progression of events. The time frames shift from 70s or 80s San Francisco to the near-future, and it's not always clear what the era is or how events fit into the rest of the book.
Each character reveals painful pasts and we are told the dreadful fates that await them in the future, with little spiritual or emotional uplift to lighten the path through their difficult lives

This is the best adventure book I have read in ages with huge dollops of the world's most deliciously hideous archaeology and potentially the best psychopath since Hannibal.

  • The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

Yunior) back to narrate the family history of his Rutgers roommate Oscar (who is also the brother of Yunior's sometime girlfriend). This tale begins with Oscar's grandfather and ends up encompassing quite a bit of the modern history of the Dominican Republic. And although the story hopscotches back and forth in time and location quite a bit, Diaz has complete command of his narrative.

To be fair, sometimes the story feels more like "A People's History of the Dominican Republic." than a novel about a geeky kid from New Jersey. Not that this is a bad thing -- Diaz manages to get at the political, economic, and psychological forces that brought so many Dominican immigrants to the U.S . over the last fifty years via captivating and dextrous prose

A world untouched, deep beneath the Antarctic continent, filled with riches beyond your wildest dreams. And an unseen danger, hidden for eons that may be the very doom of humanity! Secret military installations, extreme gadgetry, an awesome monster(s), and twist after twist make Subterranean perfect reading for adventure fans.
