Review: Island Beauty By Marlene
Thursday, July 23, 2009
Growing up without a mother in your life is never easy regardless how loving and supportive your father may be. Sage Churchill knows this all too well and after twenty odd years of believing her mother departed this earth, she is confronted with one hell of a shock at her father’s sick bed. Not only is her mother alive and well in Jamaica, WI, but apparently she voluntarily abandoned Sage. Unable to understand the many years of deceit, Sage travels to Jamaica to confront her mother and learn the truth…and this is where the drama begins…
Sage’s BFF Nicky joins Sage on her many trips to Jamaica however…she has concocted an ulterior motive that threatens to tear their friendship apart. Nicky’s sister has an unsuspecting new love in her life that is sure to shake things up. Tish, the fourth musketeer in this circle of friends has been hiding something – but as we all know, whats done in the dark will eventually come to light.
Once again Marlene has penned an excellent story that will leave you shaking your head like “She did what?” The way the action unfolds is very unsuspecting and real and the descriptive details of how things are on the island made me feel as though I got a free mini-tour. Island Beauty is an EXCELLENT summer read that is sure to leave you satisfied at its completion.

“ISLAND BEAUTY is the best piece Marlene have ever written. She has really matured as a writer. I think it would even make a good movie. There is great suspense and conflict. Marlene shows life and how it really is, even when we think we have good friendships, life can throw us a curve ball. I really enjoyed reading her story it was great, the tone was good and it was exciting. Keep up the good work!”

Sage Churchill has always had the best of everything, a loving father that gave her everything her heart desired and good friends to kick it with, which always made life more exciting. She thought her life was perfect, until the day her father makes a deathbed confession that shatters her world as she knows it.
When Sage finds out that her mother, whom she was led to believe died, may be alive and living in Jamaica, her world is turned upside down. She is faced with the toughest decision of her life. Does she search for a woman she’s never known or does she ignore her longing for a mother’s love?
Sage, Nicky, Tish, and Lace have been friends since pre-school. But their relationship suffers when they bring the drama to Sage’s doorstep. Her girl, Nicky, has gotten herself involved in the drug game and has Sage’s name all caught up in the mix, bringing the authorities to her door. Tish, has a mystery lover and when that person’s identity is revealed, it may tear the girls’ thirteen year friendship apart and possible cause one of them to lose their life.
Will Sage find her mother and live happily ever after? Will she survive the drama? Or have a nervous breakdown?

Making It On My Own tugs at the heart in so many ways that it’s impossible to give it ample praise. The most admirable quality of Marlene’s storytelling is the masterful way that she gives a human face to the vague world of homelessness. As Shay meets and learns the stories of other women in predicaments similar to hers, the reader vicariously learns to rid him/herself of any preconceived notions of homeless people, specifically the concept that they’re lazy, shiftless, or choose to be so afflicted in life.
Whether driven into indigence by health problems, unemployment, or even deceptive husbands, Marlene’s narrative quickly reminds the reader that his/her own personal situation can also change without warning, and that being thankful for the security of our own lives should be the top priority of our every waking moment.
