The way I rate:
star - A complete disaster that doesn't need to be read or even touched
stars - Not my cup of tea, but probably others should try it
stars - Enjoyable reading
stars - Very caught into the story, recommend as a read
stars - I'm very drastic when I give a book five stars. You will see, that on my shelf, all Agatha Christie's and Patricia Cornwell's books are rated five stars. If there's an other author that I rated five stars, that means, that the book made me quite an impression and that you really have to read it.
