Born in 1964 in Perth, Western Australia, the son of a Welsh father and Australian mother. I joined the Australian Army at 18 and my service included attachments to the New Zealand Army Officer Cadet School and British Parachute Regiment. In addition to my military service I served with the Australian Federal Police, Australian Protective Service and between 2008 - 2012 was the Sheriff of New South Wales.
