I enjoyed this memoir of climbing and finding a way to make a living doing something you love. Steph Davis is a free climber that I have been very impressed with and follow. While this memoir doesn't follow a typical trajectory, like many by climbers, the pieces on her free climbing the Salathe wall and Freerider are great!

  • How to Climb Series: Climbing Anchors

A great text on climbing anchors, the equipment used to build them, and techniques to make them strong. Long's writing style keeps the reading fresh and the reader interested. I recommend it!

  • Extreme Alpinism: Climbing Light, Fast, and High
    • Rated 4 stars

This is a great style of "How to" book. The author deals with the abstract of alpinism. Those characteristics a good alpinist should have a firm understanding and mastering of. He hits all ends of the spectrum and reinforces each topic with personal stories. It is also loaded with excellent photos. I recommend it to everyone, whether an alpinist, aspiring alpinist, or someone interested in alpinists and what they do.

  • Denali Guidebook to Hiking, Photography, and Camping in Denali National Park, Alaska

Good guidebook! Enough detail to give you good ideas and keep out of trouble. The author seems it relevant to warn you of bears on every hike, but better than some poor sap being found a heap of mess and this book with no bear warning :)

  • Climbing : training for peak performance
    • Rated 5 stars

A solid and complete training book! The best I have ever read. This book addresses the many myths related to diet, weight loss, nutrition, supplements, and training. The book also provides great examples of specialized exercise equipment that focuses on specific muscle groups. I would recommend this book to anyone training for climbing, hiking, cycling, running, or other endeavors.

Loewen has skill as a writer. Her descriptions are good, but it feels like this memoir never found its path. Essentially it is a collection of reminesces of her time as a climbing ranger. Each story contains a line stating her 'embarassment' or 'shame' about not climbing harder or going farther or faster. This feeling is never developed or overcoming it is never addressed. It felt excessive and left me feeling as though there was never really any resolution to any of it. I got the impression one of her bosses being killed on a climbing trip was a big event in her life as a climber and person, but she never develops this. It's hinted at in the Afterword and it leaves a lot to be implied by the reader.

Twight's writing is mesmorizing for its honesty and careful balance of attitude and honesty. He does a great job of illustrating the bond that can develop between two climbers attacking difficult pitches. I think the highlight of each piece is the author notes at the end. They do a good job of summing up each piece, giving a good context to the time, and most of all showing his growth as a human and a climber. I would recommend this to everybody, whether climber or not!
