I feel that The Unconsoled is Ishiguro's best novel by a long shot. I have read all of his novels except one of his earliest ones (I have read "...Floating World"). It is a wonderful novel. I tend to like novels with a lot of self-consciousness (people running around not knowing what's going on and whether they are doing the right thing....novels of neurosis, I guess one might call them) and this is the consummate novel in this regard. Perhaps a modern version of Kafka-esque but in a sense of social self-consciousness rather than grusome feelings. I have been unimpressed with Ishiguro's more recent novels, which makes it ironic that I have yet to read one of his earlier ones.
Welcome to the group based on the book 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. There is a general explanation of the group under the discussion thread GROUP GUIDELINES. The books of the month (BOTM) that the group is reading are pinned to the top. I hope you will enjoy the group and perhaps join in one or more of the monthly reads. April’s BOTM are 1984 by Orwell, The English Patient by Ondaatje and Black Water by Oates. Hope you can join in one or all the discussions.
