My chief passion, besides the family, tech gadgets and shoes, is books. I’m an avid reader of romance, suspense and mysteries, fantasy and a media junkie (occupational disease, I’m afraid), so you’ll find bits and pieces of my views on these besides reviews of books, mostly romance and lots of historicals on my blog.

  • A Duke of Her Own

The enigmatic Villiers gets his happy ending in this book, and the comedy that the readers get treated to is well worth the wait. Eleanor is such an engaging, intelligent heroine with an irreverent sense of humour that I couldn’t help rooting for her. The ‘matchmakers’ in the story – from Elenor’s sister, Anne, to Villiers’ own son, Tobias – were delightful in their obvious manipulation of various situations to bring about their desired ending for the couple.

Of course, having made poor judgment calls and mistakes in the past, Villiers procrastinated in making his decision between the two ladies, even when his heart was screaming out the choice for him. It was sort of frustrating, but it allowed the introduction of a rival in the form of Eleanor’s old sweetheart – another Duke – which stirred up the romantic comedy angle with a duel. Definitely warrants a reread. More at http://inmybooks.com/blog1/2009/09/book-review-this-duchess-of-mine-a-duke-of-her-own/

  • This Duchess of Mine

From Elijah’s rescue of Jemma from the disastrous party on the royal yatch at the start of the story to the closing charity party the reunited and very-much-in-love Beaumonts threw, Ms James kept me captivated with the witty repartee, engaging characters, and the dilemmas faced by Jemma, Elijah and even Villiers. What made the story an emotional experience was the desperate lengths Jemma and Elijah go through to at first, hide their true feelings for each other, then reach out and attempt a reconciliation, while trying not to read too much into the hidden meanings in each other’s heated remarks, which always happen at rather inconvenient times, the new layers and understanding revealed when they each share a secret side of their lives, the unrelenting hope in miracles for a dying man and the uplifting reaffirmation of the love they had, and always have secretly, coming into full bloom. • The Darkest Night
    • Rated 3 stars

As series debut go, The Darkest Night was okay in execution. I do understand that the author is trying to build up enough of background and lay the foundation for the world of the Lords, but some parts were a little messy. • The Darkest Whisper
    • Rated 4 stars

Without a doubt, The Darkest Whisper is the best in the series, and marks a crucial turning point in the Lords’ battle against the Hunters. Ms Showalter surpassed all my expectations of the story’s development. Matching the already anxious Gwendolyn with the control-freak Sabin could only result in some highly entertaining interactions. • The Darkest Pleasure
    • Rated 3 stars

Both central characters, Reyes, who is Pain incarnated, and Danika, who has the talent of clairvoyance, which she’s never known nor understood, didn’t exactly start off on the right foot in the series debut. Readers finally learn, in this book, why Cronus, the Titan King, ordered Aeron, keeper of Wrath, to kill Danika. We also learn more about the Lords’ mortal enemy, the Hunters who’s sworn to annihilate the warriors.

Characters wise, Reyes and Danika are both such conflicted people that their inner struggles to overcome their doubts and fears were what kept me glued to this book, apart from the evolution of the central plot, that of recovering the artefacts that would help them unearth the cursed Pandora’s Box. • Darkest Kiss
    • Rated 3 stars

The Darkest Kiss throws Anya, an immortal known to delight in causing chaos, in the path of Lucien, who’s possessed by Death and ordered by the Titan King to kill her. Characters wise, I heartily approve of this pairing of opposites. Anya’s irreverent insouciance and mischievous streaks, and sometimes spoiled-princess bitchiness, make her an engaging counterfoil to Lucien’s sombre, contemplative and strong-silent-male and sometimes joyless spoilsport attitude. It was such fun watching their back-and-forth tussle for domination and control in this relationship. The verbal battles were entertaining, and most of the times, downright funny. • Angels' Blood
    • Rated 5 stars

Angels’ Blood simply blew me away. Not only did Nalini turned the common vampire lore on its head, she gave paranormal readers a rather refreshing angle for the existence of the blood suckers that sort of made me take a second look at he subgenre after staying away from all vampire tales. From page one, Elena’s emotions, dreams, and future caught and connected with me. Her struggles for independence away from her family, her adamant refusal to take the easy way out and her secret dreams of love and trust are all human aspirations that I think most modern women can relate to. • Because You're Mine (Avon Historical Romance)
    • Rated 3 stars

The sequel to Somewhere, the story put pretty ingénue Lady Madeline Matthews in the path of Logan Scott, the legendary actor and theatrical director, who’s also a notorious womanizer. Madeline intended to get herself debauched by Logan to thwart her parents’ plans to marry her off to an aging, rich lecherous lord.

I couldn’t stop turning the pages to find out where their search for the baby’s father, and for the courage to commit to each other will take them. Another clear winner from Ms Kleypas, this is another contemporary romance that I really liked.
