My chief passion, besides the family, tech gadgets and shoes, is books. I’m an avid reader of romance, suspense and mysteries, fantasy and a media junkie (occupational disease, I’m afraid), so you’ll find bits and pieces of my views on these besides reviews of books, mostly romance and lots of historicals on my blog.

  • Because You're Mine (Avon Historical Romance)

The sequel to Somewhere, the story put pretty ingénue Lady Madeline Matthews in the path of Logan Scott, the legendary actor and theatrical director, who’s also a notorious womanizer. Madeline intended to get herself debauched by Logan to thwart her parents’ plans to marry her off to an aging, rich lecherous lord.

I couldn’t stop turning the pages to find out where their search for the baby’s father, and for the courage to commit to each other will take them. Another clear winner from Ms Kleypas, this is another contemporary romance that I really liked.

Back in her hometown and attempting to recuperate from a broken, abusive marriage, Haven Travis decided to keep herself busy and independent with a job at her brother, Jack’s company. Right about this time, Hardy Cates strolled back into her life, and a surprising friendship blossomed between them. More at http://inmybooks.com/blog1/2009/08/31/smooth-talking-blue-eyed-devil/

  • The Courtship Dance

Delightful as this story may be, there were times when I felt like strangling Francesca for not using her usually bright intellect to really see the situation. It was a little out of character and I wasn’t too enamoured of her behaviour. There were some clichés in the plot which made the story development predictable, but the hero saved the story for me.

  • The Marriage Spell: A Novel

Make no mistake. This is a romance novel and not a fantasy work. I was able to enjoy the book for the excellent period flavour and rich detail, as well the down-to-earth characters and their self-deprecating humour. It's a 3.5 stars for me.

To appreciate the story arc and the message this contemporary romance conveys, you have to suspend all belief in logic, the tangible and visible, and just go with the imagination and the flow of the story. It’s a very sweet love story that makes no apologies about expounding on the transforming power of love, and the purity of a lover that transcends time and space. If you’re looking for an uplifting, empowering love story, suspend the cynic in you and read this book!

  • The Sins of Lord Easterbrook

This highly anticipated follow-up to the Rothwell series reveals Christian’s mysterious past finally! Having been heretofore portrayed as an enigmatic recluse, who is given to generous shows of love and solidarity to those he love … as witnessed in previous books, Christian’s dark past, which involves a secret identity, an addiction to opium which he overcame, a beautiful and strong minded lady, and an unforgettable trip to Canon in China seven years ago, where he learned something about his father that would later involve him, finally caught up with him. • The Trouble with Moonlight
    • Rated 3 stars

The book has a promising plot premise, that of a master spy suffering from a temporary impediment in his safecracking abilities, teaming up with an unconventional woman, Lusinda Havershaw, with the ability to become invisible when unclothed in moonlight, to retrieve a list that, fallen into enemy hands, would put the entire British Intelligence team at risk of exposure. But this is somehow marred by the slightly clumsy delivery, and of course the numerous typos did not endear me to the author. A Countess Below Stairs

A heart-warming, old-fashioned, and rather chaste romance. The ending was not just happy, it was funny, heart-warming and endearingly sweet. More on http://inmybooks.com/blog1/2009/07/26/countess-below-stairs/

  • The Russian Concubine
    • Rated 3 stars

The book contains quite a bit of violence, with some poignant moments of tender emotions, to wring some sympathy out of the romantics. Although the narrative lapse into occasional periods of inertia where there is much action, that does not carry the flow of the story forward. Yet, Ms Furnivall’s vivid descriptive, and detailing of the turbulent times and personal upheavals in Lydia’s young life and her struggle to not be oppressed by the depravity and corruption so prevalent in the city are what holds the reader’s interest.

In fact, I’m already looking forward to the follow-up novel, where Lydia attempts to find her father, long thought to be dead in concentration camp. More at http://inmybooks.com/blog1/2009/06/19/the-russian-concubine/
