I am heading in a new direction with my reading. Or should I say an old one. I have already read some historical fiction and a few classics and am back again. For years, I read non-fiction history and I think I need a break.

Mostly, I get my books at the library these days, since I usually don't buy novels. Most of the books I own... more »

I read and enjoyed Massie's "Peter the Great" years ago when it first came out but, when I tried to re-read it recently I was bored to tears. Just finished "Catherine the Great" by the way, having mostly skimmed the last 150 pages. Guess I've been spoiled recently by reading two AMAZING books: "Citizens of London" by Lynne Olson and "To End All Wars" by Adam Hochschild.

Since you're considering reading Massie's new biography of Catherine the Great a word of warning. I've found it to be very disappointing, quite repetitive and dull. Only about 150 pages to go so I'll try to stick it out. You should consider reading the "one-star" reviews on amazon.com before starting this ponderous tome.

I have loads of books on my amazon wishlist, but I think I'm going to try to read the ones I own or have from the library first.

I've started a discussion about Africa in the Non-fiction group, so we could more easily find it. I've quite a few books planned for Africa, not all about nature. :)
I'd love to hear your ideas and Care's as well.

Don't worry about this group read (seeing as you just joined). But in a couple of weeks we'll be voting on our next March-April group read so you might want to keep an eye out for that one :)

Welcome to the “Who Doesn’t Love a Classic?” Group!

We’re a very active group so I hope you enjoy it here. Feel free to take your time and browse around. We have group reads that take place every two months, a discussion thread where people post great reviews (post yours too!) and lots of other interesting conversations taking place all the time.

…And don’t forget to introduce yourself in the Introductions thread!

So how's it going? Are you planning on doing the quarterly read with the non-fiction group? If you like all things medieval, believe me you'll like the mortimer book.
