I'm not much of an autobiographer (such things are better left to the professionals).

Here are a few favorite quotes:

"What chance has the ignorant uncultivated liar against the educated expert?" -Mark Twain

"An injurious truth has no merit over an injurious lie." -Mark Twain

"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in... more »

Predictable and campy from a 20th century perspective, but it must have been quite something at the time it was written.

    Psmith in the City

Rather like a British Ferris Bueller story at the turn of the century, but with cricket instead of Ferraris and grueling bank jobs instead of high school classes. Psmith (with a silent "P") is the most delightfully chipper sardonic I've ever run across.

Deliciously off-kilter humor with a particular turn of phrase that catches you off guard constantly. The dialog is nothing less than brilliant and the story moves along at a good trot.

Wodehouse surprised me with this one. I've enjoyed his Jeeves & Wooster novels, but they grow a bit tiresome and predictable by final page. Love Among the Chickens is flat out the most original comedic love story I've ever read. I enjoyed it as an audio book on a long roadtrip and it made the miles fly past!

A bit like Winnie the Pooh, the Jungle Book has been turned into a cheap childrens story when I doubt its author intended it as such. Very entertaining and well written.

Despite a one-dimensional villain and at least one goofy character, quite an engaging and entertaining novel.

I guess every author must write a bomb some time. I've always enjoyed Austen's penchant for slow, rich character development and minute detail, but the plot of this book drags on for chapter after chapter with little of interest. Fanny is a milquetoast heroine, too timid to even be truly conflicted about being constantly misused and overlooked. The real love story is blurted out as a mere two paragraph suffix to the story, and the only real plot twist comes in the final chapter. It has many moments of wit, but the storytelling was a complete letdown.

For literature considered a classic, it sure reads a lot like a seamy paperback romance in parts. However, I have to give Burroughs credit for a unique story engagingly told, regardless of its unnecessary frustrations. The ending--ughh--entirely unappealing yet not unexpected. I hope for more, but I'm glad I read it.

Morose and brooding are the two words that come to mind. It's well written and not boring by any means, but I was less than captivated. I'm 50% of the way through and I think I'm giving up on it.

Soulful, rich, and easy to enjoy. Wordsworth strikes a chord in me.
