I seem to alternate over the decades between reading world literature novels, Sir Thomas Browne, the esoteric and comparative religion, Carl Jung and music.

I've posted my review of "We" (I think you might have seen it) and now I'm very interested to know your opinion. What do you think of the book? Zamyatin's language is so specific (and sometimes hard to read, even for me), I can't even imagine the translation.

I gave it to a friend as a gift for christmas like 3 years ago. I haven't read it myself though I've intended to. Guess I'll have to jump on the bandwagon soon enough. Light reads are good though, easily finished.

You had? Hm, well, I'm at the beginning of this "thing" about Russian literature. Any suggestions are more than welcome.
    Have a nice day! :)

Yes, you're right, it seems that many started reading it since the movie of it appeared. I haven't read any reviews about it therefore I don't know what to expect.. which is good, because it keeps me continuing it since the beginning seems quite low.
Have you read other books written by Bulgakov? I also noticed that you have many Russian authors on your shelf. They are my favourite after the Romanian ones, of course.

I do have some tomes lined up this year and am hoping I could focus enough to read them at a reasonable time. I gave up watching TV for reading time but the web consumes a lot of time too.

I think I'll pass on the 'Game of Thrones' book but will be interested in seeing the TV series. I've watched the first season. 'Life of Pi' I already watched and am not that interested in the book so I'm just okay with the movie. Victor Hugo has other books I want to read ('Notre Dame de Paris', 'The Toilers of the Sea') and 'Les Mis' is not calling for a reread (I doubt if I'll read the thing again). Too bad the movie was hampered by tone-deaf singing.

borges said :"El verbo leer, como el verbo amar y el verbo soñar, no soporta 'el modo imperativo'. Yo siempre les aconsejé a mis estudiantes que si un libro los aburre lo dejen; que no lo lean porque es famoso, que no lean un libro porque es moderno, que no lean un libro porque es antiguo. La lectura debe ser una de las formas de la felicidad y no se puede obligar a nadie a ser feliz".

Well it is fast reading (as fast as it can be at roughly 800-1000 pages per book, five books and counting). If you're into the genre I think you'll like it, otherwise probably not.

Yes, in english. I only read english literature in the original language. I read an Agatha Cristie today, a pleasant if perhap light read. Are you a fan thrillers/dectective novels?

Thank you for your note, which helped me to realize that my short remarks created an impression that wasn't quite what I intended. Reading the stories in Death in Venice and other Tales did feel like work, but it was rewarding. I was prompted to read something of Mann after seeing Nabokov's dismissal of Mann as a "mediocrity." It may be that reading him in translation is part of the problem. I hope to read at least one of his major works, but not just yet. Do you recommend 'The Magic Mountain' or one of his other works?
