I have to say, I think the writing in this book was pretty atrocious, but it's still an addictive story. Goodkind seems to latch onto every fantasy cliche I've ever heard of... it makes for a formulaic narrative, but then, the formula is popular for a reason!

My biggest complaint is the characterization of Kahlan, the powerful heroine who can't seem to walk five steps without breaking down into tears and waiting for her male companions to comfort her. (Sigh.) I preferred Kahlan's portrayal in the "Legend of the Seeker" TV series, but maybe she'll improve in later books.

Mrs. Dalloway is one of those novels that's best appreciated after close reading and discussion. The first time I read it (alone and far too quickly), I hated it, but after re-reading for an English class, I have a whole new appreciation for the complexity and brilliance of Virginia Woolf's writing. I truly believe this is one of the greatest works of literature in the English language, and when you read it and understand it for the first time, it's a profound experience.
