Life Rocks... If you play the right beat. And trying to find that beat.

Love reading... Am a wannabe writer... Used to be an avid sketcher... And all three hobbies are hurting because of my day job. Trying to find the right balance between everything in life. Whew... really wish had more than 24 hours in a day.

Just read your review of 'A Study in Scarlet'. Since you do not seem to be hung up on the inaccuracies of SH's portrayal in the RDJ starrer, I really think you'll like Neil Gaiman's short story 'A Study in Emerald'. Unless you've already read this SH pastiche, Gaiman (Stardust, Sandman) takes Scarlet and gives it an undertone of the macabre and also a little something else which I won't spoil for you :)

Himanshu, if you still care, I just today read your note. I'll tell you this, Western society does not have all the answers, but if you want to know what Western Society stood for in the 20th century, I can think of no better book than Catch-22, which is not an anti-war book. Heller said so himself.

    Hi,
My first was Gold Bat ( a torn up, battered copy I inherited from my parents) but my favorites are Leave it to PSmith and Aunts aren't Gentlemen. I am back at Blandings right now :). I was in a slump where nothing was really holding my interest and so came back to Wodehouse, who is like a cleansing for the reading palate (to take a very narrow view).
I don't think I've read any King but if you're looking for some real tingles down your spine try Roald Dahl. To most he is the writer of childrens fiction but if they only knew. His short stories reveal how truly devious he was.
Ok, Ok I am going to stop now. No more recommendations, I promise :).

    Hey,
Interesting and eclectic shelf. So few understand and appreciate the true genius that is Wodehouse that I get curious about the handful I find on Shelfari. :D.
As far as business books go, I have a recommendation -- The Emperors of Chocolate: Inside the Secret World of Hershey and Mars by Joel Brenner. I think you might enjoy it. Chocolate will never be the same again ;).

It's still not as good as the book because movies never can be, but the fact that King himself wrote the screenplay makes a big difference. I'm a big King fan and always watch movies that are made from his books and have to say that most of the time I end up disappointed with the outcome. The movies themselves are sometimes good, but I've learned you have to watch them with an open mind and a knowledge that you can't expect the book itself to appear on screen. Can you imagine how long some of those movies would be?

Hello, I saw you left a note and question on my shelf. To answer your question, Yes there are two movies based on the book. The original was Stanley Kubrick's 1980 version starring Jack Nicholson & Shelley Duvall. The second version was the screenplay version written by King himself, 1997 starring Steven Weber & Rebecca DeMornay. The 1997 version is much truer to the book and a lot longer than the original. You can see the trailer for it if you go to www.imdb.com and search Shining. Let me know what you think if you get a chance to watch the movie.

Yes, I did. My dad took me to an island in Greece when I was 15. That was the first book I read there. Good stuff, I actually really enjoyed scaring the bejeezes out of myself :-)
