By vocation, I am a teacher, by inclination, a student of human nature. Illness forced retirement upon me in 1997 and I am now a research historian/writer.

I have published one book - Against the Odds, ISBN 0-9542565-0-6 (non-fiction) and some fanfiction, just for fun.

I live for part of the year aboard an English narrowboat... more »

A big book, in scope and depth. The addition of an original character to this all-star cast provides a good focus for the 'off-stage' events that would have been so difficult to include without resorting to exposition through dialogue.

I first read this in secondary school. What a strange choice to give to 11 year old girls who would find it impossible to susped their 20th century judgement of 19th century spinsters.

I re-read it some years ago and found it charming, witty, and insightful.

ISci-fi? Sci-fantasy? It's a book that's hard to categorise. I stuck with it because the premise intrigued me.

Nice page-turner that makes no intellectual demands whatsoever.

  • An Old Man's Love (Trollope, Penguin)

His final (completed) novel not one of his best imo, though I enjoyed listening to it on BBC7. Read this only if, like me, you're working your way through Trollope's novels. One for the fans.

No problems of disbelief with this one. I was swept into the world of Georgiana, Lord Derby, Drury Lane theatre, and the politics of George III's reign and remained there until the final full stop. Highly recommended.

The one for which I made Potter7 wait while I finished it. Another historical novel that sweeps the reader into the world of Elizabeth I. The main character is a fiictional one, a country lad who seeks to make his fortune in London as a Court painter. Unfortunately, his passionate views on how a portrait should be painted make him ill-suited to patrons whose desire for iconography overides any attempt at realistic representation. Overall's (*snigger* - sorry, can't help but think of Acorn Antiques and Julie Walter's portrayal) husband is an artist and she makes good use of him as a source - particularly when it comes to the shocking end of one of her main characters. • Hester (Oxford World's Classics)

Her finest novel, imo. Hester is a wonderful mix of rebellious young woman railing against the confines of 'proper' Victorian society. Highly recommended, if you enjoy Victorian Literature.
