This review was originally done by me for Romance Junkies. http://www.romancejunkies.com Caledonia Rivers is a leader and well known public figure in the struggle for women’s suffrage. The press dubbed her the “Maid of Mayfair” thanks to her spotless reputation. After a broken engagement Callie swore off men. A chance encounter with a young photographer has her thinking thoughts she’d never dreamed before. When that same photographer, Hadrian St. Claire, comes to her saying he’s been commissioned to take her portrait, Callie is a bit unsure. She’s terrified of being placed before the unforgiving camera lens. The longer she spends in Hadrian’s presence the more comfortable she becomes. Soon the photography sessions are little more than excuses to see each other. Hadrian is in a desperate situation. He must pay his gambling debt soon. If he doesn’t come up with the money, those goons will be after him again and they won’t be content until he’s bleeding. So it seems that fortune is smiling on him when a prolific politician comes to him to commission a portrait. Hadrian is offered a grand sum of money to take a damning picture of Miss Caledonia Rivers. He is ordered to vanquish her. Backing out of the deal is not an option. However, he soon finds that the more time he spends with Callie the more he finds about her to admire. Hadrian comes to realize that he doesn’t want to ruin Callie, but can he break off his deal without losing his life? More importantly will Callie ever forgive him when she learns what he’s done? VANQUISHED by Hope Tarr is absolutely wonderful! Her characters are very real. I found that I really cared about them throughout the story. Callie is a strong woman, if a bit ahead of her time. Hadrian is a torn man with a difficult past. Despite his belief that he can’t love, Hadrian finds himself falling for Callie. Hope Tarr has done an excellent job with the ending of this story too. I love the way everything comes together, and connections are made that really pull the story to a close. She provides a great lead in to future books in this set. VANQUISHED is a must read, and I anxiously await the next book.

  • A Lady's Pleasure
    • Rated 5 stars

Review courtesy of RomanceJunkies.com All her life Merriam Everett was known as Merriam the Mouse, first by her father, then by her late husband. Merriam is tired of it and vows to do something bold. After she overhears a cutting remark about “whey-faced widows” from Julian Clay, Earl of Westleigh, Merriam decides to seduce him. With the help of a local madam, she transforms from a mouse into a cat. At Lord Milbank’s infamous masque, Merriam stages her seduction. The evening goes better than planned and she experiences a night of passion unlike any she’s ever known. It’s only days later that she discovers her error: She had seduced the wrong man. Drake Southerton, Duke of Sussex has returned home to face his reputation as the “Deadly Duke.” Years earlier Drake’s wife was brutally murdered. Julian Clay, his one-time best friend was the first to declare Drake guilty. With no evidence to support this claim, Drake was never charged, however amid scandal and gossip Drake fled the country. Now he’s back, and he’s determined to prove his theory that Julian is the guilty party behind his wife’s murder. After a mysterious woman seduces him at the masque, he’s filled with a second mission. Drake must find that woman and make her his mistress. He tracks Merriam down, and makes her an offer. He offers her a “Grand Season”, she will remain his mistress for the rest of the Season and when it’s over they will part ways no strings attached. Merriam agrees because with him she’s found a passion she never knew existed. But will either of them be able to keep their heart out of the game? A LADY’S PLEASURE by Renee Bernard is fabulous. It’s a story of vengeance, betrayal, and lust. But it’s also a story of justice, second chances and love. Merriam and Drake each have their own reasons for trying to keep love out of the equation. However, the more time they spend together, the more they come to mean to each other. Drake has a skewed view of the past, and he’s determined to right the wrong. Merriam is completely unaware of Drake’s reputation. When she’s told of it by none other than Julian Clay, she’s not sure whom to believe. The past resurrects itself and the truth is revealed during a truly momentous scene in the book. I never saw it coming and I was truly surprised. After everything comes to a head and the drama dies down, you begin to fear that Merriam and Drake’s relationship will die as well. But the end brings a glorious declaration of love and a wonderfully happy ending.

  • The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod: Eighth Grade Bites

This review was originally done by me for The Internet Book Database at http://www.ibookdb.net. Vladimir Tod is your average thirteen-year-old...vampire. He may have to sneak blood in his lunch and make sure his garlic allergy is on file with the school, but he also has to pass that pop quiz in history. Ever since the death of his parents, Vlad has been living with his Aunt Nelly. No one can explain exactly what caused the fire that killed his parents, and Vlad's not quite ready to give up looking for answers. He's not the only one seeking answers though. Suddenly, one of Vlad's teachers has gone missing. Vlad's never met a vampire aside from his father, but he's sure that one is behind the disappearance of his teacher. He's even starting to suspect it may be the new teacher, Mr. Otis. Vlad drags his best friend, Henry, the only other human to know his secret, in on his investigation. After snooping through his old house, Vlad comes across an old journal kept by his father. Is he ready for what he'll find in its pages? Will it hold the answers he so desperately seeks? EIGHTH GRADE BITES is a great start to a new series. The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod look to be promising indeed. Vlad is a very sympathetic character. He's been through a lot at a young age. He's dealing with typical teenage angst as well as hiding a pretty serious secret. Henry is the kind of best friend every teenager needs. He sticks with Vlad no matter how dangerous the situation seems. Aunt Nelly is the best guardian a vampire could have. She cares deeply for Vlad, and she protects his secret in ingenious ways. Heather Brewer has a wonderful debut here. I've never considered myself a fan of young adult titles, but she's sucked me in and I can't wait to read more about Vladimir Tod.

  • The Dark Gate (Nocturne)

    The Dark Gate (Nocturne)

    by Pamela Palmer
    • Rated 5 stars

This review was originally done by me for Romance Junkies. http://www.romancejunkies.com Jack Hallihan is at a loss. Women are being assaulted and people are being murdered, yet no one remembers a thing. Even the victims come up blank when asked about their attacker. At the first scene an ancient amulet known as The Stone of Ezrie was stolen from the Smithsonian. Jack doesn’t yet know the connection, but there’s no such thing as coincidence. On top of all of this, the voices in Jack’s head are getting worse. He fears he’s slowly succumbing to the madness that killed his father. He’d be happy if he could figure out this case before the voices pull him under completely. Larsen Vale is known as the “ice queen.” She’s a lawyer believed to be a man-hater, thanks to her work defending abused women. What no one knows is that Larsen holds a terrible secret. She is cursed with visions of death. Because of this, she won’t let anyone get close to her. At the wedding of a client, Larsen has her first vision since childhood. Only this one is different, she sees her own death and the death of another man. In fear she runs, changing the outcome and runs right into Jack Hallihan. From the terror in her eyes he knows she saw something. After learning of the murder at the wedding, Jack believes Larsen is hiding something. He needs to keep her nearby to find out what she knows, and because he’s discovered that her touch quiets the voices in his head. Jack knows he needs her help to solve this case and keep his sanity. THE DARK GATE is one of the best page-turners I’ve read in months. Pamela Palmer has done a marvelous job with this one. Jack and Larsen are characters that you really care about. Each of them carries a gift that they don’t understand, and it’s only through each other that they come to terms with their abilities. The creature they fight is mystifying and terrifying. It killed me every time I had to put the book down because I wanted to know if they’d find his vulnerability and defeat him. At the same time I needed to see if Larsen and Jack would get past their faults and really come into their true potential. The sexual tension keeps you on the edge of your seat. Pamela Palmer really knows how to draw it out and make the progression into the bedroom a believable one. At the end of the story, when the moment of truth comes, after the monster is defeated, tears were nearly brought to my eyes. It’s so sweet and not to be missed. THE DARK GATE by Pamela Palmer is a must have paranormal thrill ride. Pick it up today.

  • At the Edge
    • Rated 5 stars

This review was originally done by me for Romance Junkies. http://www.romancejunkies.com Claire and her sisters come from a long line of psychics. Much as they would like to deny their heritage, they cannot. Claire, the youngest of the triplets, is an empath. She can read the feelings and emotions of others. This makes her the most sensitive of the three. After two traumatic experiences, her powers are stronger, making her more sensitive than ever. So Claire has hidden herself away in a place where she won't have to deal with the constant intrusion of other people's feelings. Neil Olafson is hurting. He's never recovered from the disappearance of his infant son, eight years ago. Now, his aunt Eunice, one of his last ties to family, has died. Neil's not sure what to make of his Aunt's reclusive next door neighbor. He knows Aunt Eunice was fond of Claire, but so far he hasn't seen much about her to like. The woman went nuts when she found out he was moving in and building a shop next door to her house. She began suggesting everything she could think of to get him to leave, but Neil has no intention of going anywhere. Their relationship takes an unexpected turn when Neil stops by Claire's house and finds her lying on her workroom floor, victim of a brutal attack. Neil is pulled into the unusual world of Claire's psychic family when they instantly start calling, seemingly already aware of what's happened. He can't figure out why they are all so insistent on avoiding hospitals or the police, but against his better judgement, he does as they ask. Now they are all working together to find out who attacked Claire and why. Neil's starting to wonder if these psychics couldn't help him find his long lost son. AT THE EDGE starts off Cait London's new trilogy with an excellent got-to-know-what-happens-next thriller. Claire and Neil are so genuinely likeable that you really enjoy reading about them. Claire is caring, just as you would expect an empath to be. Life experiences have made her delicate and just like her family, you want to cradle her from harm. That's what made Neil the perfect hero for her. He is her protector, but he's more than that. Neil is able to bring out her fun side, and yes he's even able to bring out her grumpy side. The two of them have a true connection, and it's great to be a part of it, even if only for a few hours. I love the family dynamics between the girls' mother, Greer, and the triplets, Claire, Tempest, and Leona. Due to their shared heritage this family is closer than most. It's great watching them look out for each other and I can't wait to see more of that in Tempest's and Leona's stories. This story takes you through so many twists and turns and makes connections that you never saw coming. It also sets the stage for an underlying mystery that will flow through all three books. This only serves to make me even more anxious for further installments. I loved AT THE EDGE and I'm sure you will too. I just know it will leave you panting for Tempest's story, coming soon.
