Happy Purple Girl

Happy Purple Girl

I love to read and have been doing so for as long as I can remember.

I have always loved books and stories, paper and pens, ink and paint and the fabulous chemistry that all of those things combined have the capacity to create.

The books on my shelf are all books that I have read or, in several cases, am in the process of...more »

Hey Girl! How's that Maureen O'Hara book? I love her! I also love reading bios of the old Hollywood stars. I've got one on Carol Channing I bought for 50cents from the library a couple of months ago that I've been wanting to read, but I've got to get this "thong" out of the way first. I just finished this little mystery book for it and although I liked it some, mysteries just aren't my thing. They always feel a little too contrived. Anywho, are you going to be able to put up our cast list for Pillars? I think we discussed that. I would like to get the other bookies messing around on the group page again. That was fun. I sent out an email about next months get together. Well, hopefully I'll see you next week. Ciao baby! OJ

    Hey there,

No need to apologize for not finishing the book as quickly as I did, sometimes life just gets in the way! Ha Ha!

I do agree that John Ford movies are great but he certainly was abusive to Maureen at work and on a personal level too. Some of the things he did to her were unbelievable, like going to her house when she wasn't home and taking the entire box of record albums that were given to her by the record company that she recorded the album for... She never even said anything about it because she knew if she did, he would just do something more to her. He was wacko!

I like John Wayne too! I would have thought that Maureen would have done more movies for Disney since Parent Trap was so successful... hmmm However with Disney not honoring their contract and what followed I guess I wouldn't have either! I had no idea that Disney was so ruthless, that was a surprise to me.

I think that I would like to read "Star Machine" too... it would be a good follow up! Ruthless business for sure!

I also want to watch some of the movies that Maureen made! Should be fun!

Happy reading! Talk to you about the rest of the book when you are finished!

    Hi there,
Well, I couldn't stop reading the book until I finished it! (I didn't get much done over the weekend but read!) Wow! What a lady! I agree with you about her incredible discipline and dedication to achieve her goal of being a serious actress, although she did have her heart set on the stage, not movies! I also was surprised to read about her family life, not the typical poor Irish upbringing that I expected! Her parents were quite well off and into the arts, which certainly was a big boost to Maureen in addition to her wonderfully strong personality and code of ethics. That first marriage was ridiculous...I would have told the guy to take a hike, I'm not interested and continued packing to catch the boat! I think that she just totally went into shock when she heard that guy say, "Is this the bride!" She had to have been in a complete fog when she said "I do." Like being in a play and acting out a part, and when she came to, she finally realized the seriousness of what she had done! Yikes! That was her one of her flaws, that she would let people ware her down until she gave in and did what they wanted. That was certainly true when came to making the awful decision to marry husband number two! What a loser! I wouldn't have been married to him for ten years! And if that wasn't bad enough she also had to deal with that wacko director, John Ford! He made great movies but he was a horrible person and terribly nasty to Maureen and her brothers. That whole theatrical industry is pretty creepy to young beautiful women, and if you do make it and make some money, you've got the financial sharks to have to deal with on the other end! Who do you trust? Tough business all the way around!

I won't say anything more in case you haven't finished the book yet!

    Hi Happy Purple Girl,
Sorry I didn't respond right away but I was waiting to see if I could get "Tis Herself", Maureen O'Hara from my library as they said they had one on the shelf. Sure enough, I was able to pick it up today, so I'm ready to go when you are! I think that I will also read "Garden Spells" as I have that one too. There is a sequel to it called "Sugar Queen," maybe we can read that one together too, if it's available. I'm much better at discussing books as I read them rather than trying to remember them....my retrieval system for my memory stinks! Ha Ha but it's true!

Hope to hear from you soon! Jennifer

    Hi Happy Purple Girl,
I am your book swap partner! This should be fun! I'm not sure exactly how this works as it is my first time, but...do I suggest something that I've read that is on your Want to Read Pile? or something that we both want to read because there are quite a few of those titles and it would help us both to shorten our Want to Read Piles! That's just practical me speaking! *grins* Or a title by a new author for you that is similar to someone you have read...? What are your thoughts?

Are you on right now, or did I just miss you? I've been thinking about you all day, and then I missed your call. And then I found out you didn't really wanna talk to me, you were just playing personal secretary to your own Mr. Man. I know I've given my Mr. Man your Mr. Man's number. He probably just lost it. Anyway, I sent you a text. Hope it makes sense. How's the harp lessons? Did you have fun at Scottish Fest? My experience was a bit of a let down but not too bad. I watched Bread and Tulips...sooooo good! Thanks for the recommendation! I'm part of a weird group called Movie Lovers Lists or something like that where I list all the movies I've seen recently and some of my film faves. Check it out if you're bored. Oh, and the admin at Movie Lovers let me pick the movies to nominate for our group film for July, also to check out if you're bored. My hairdresser told me that Bonnie Irish Lass left for Italy the day we went out to lunch. I wonder if she's back yet? Anywho, my hairdresser's a hoot. Maybe the 4 of us could venture a lunch/mani/pedi date soon. Gotta go, laundry's a callin'. Call me soon! OJ
