  • Hobohemia: Emma Goldman, Lucy Parsons, Ben Reitman & Other Agitators & Outsiders In 1920s/30s Chicago
    • Rated 4 stars

Brief character sketches of notable activists and characters, but excellent details for a walking tour in Chicago.

Anyone with an interest in the history of film, celebrity gossip, pop culture, or true crime should read this book. Focusing primarily on the pre-code years of tinseltown, the book looks at the silver lining of the seamy underbelly of the movie-making beast. Absolutely fascinating. A need to read.

One of my favorite books when I was younger -- and my son loves it, too! The artwork reminds me of Harvey Kurtzman a little bit.

  • The Making of Second Life
    • Rated 4 stars

Not only is this book a good introduction to and history of Second Life, the popular 3-D online community and "virtual world," it's a solid cultural anthropology. Au's outlining of themes such as bebop reality, mirrored flourishing, and impression society are thoughtful, as well as thought provoking. This book has changed how I think about the virtual world, which has had more impact on the world and people's lives than I realized. Now I just need to spend more time there.

  • State of Exile (City Lights Pocket Poets Series)
    • Rated 4 stars

These English-translation poems -- published side by side with the original Spanish -- over a perspective and lifestyle I haven't experienced or considered before: that of the exile. The poems aren't complicated, but the emotions and issues they raise are.

I tend to be skeptical about comic books about comic books, but this hefty tome ably captures the medium's spirit of creativity and community without falling prey to over-romanticization. It's also a book about being young and living in Brooklyn, friendship and love. Well done. I've had this book since it was published. Why'd I wait so long to read it?

I started this book ages ago and am really glad that I started over again from the beginning instead of picking up where I left off. Despite Celine's politics, this is an interesting look at the seamy side of life during wartime. And it's written in a really innovative way.

    Change Your Brain

    by Timothy Leary

A quick read. Important for p. 9, Leary's description of game theory, and chapter 6. If all you looked at was p. 31, that'd be cool, too.

  • Brain Candy: Boost Your Brain Power with Vitamins, Supplements, Drugs, and Other Substances: A Comprehensive Guide
    • Rated 3 stars

An excellent introduction and reference guide to nootropics, smart drugs, and other memory- and brain-enhancing supplements. Weighs the pros and cons of each and offers synopses of research done to date.

Saroyan's stories are highly economical, and startlingly effective in their sparseness. One of my favorite writers.
