Welcome to Cornhill, IL.
The name suits it. Cornhill is a farming town situated on a hill, one of the few, measly hills that exist in Illinois. Said hill is surrounded by the fields that the people of the town take care of, mostly as a town, though there are a few plots individually owned.
Cornhill is tiny. The richest family is the one that owns the north fields, where the rest are farmed as a community. They are the Donohughs. Mr. and Mrs. Donohugh never had any children themselves, but their house always has a few orphans in it that they adopt.
The only places for work if you don't work the fields are the school, the post office, and the canning factory. It may be small, but they take pride in what they do have: Corn.
And then, of course, in the strange little cave on the side of the hill, is the tunnel that leads down into the earth. Deeper and deeper it winds, and suddenly opens up on a festive scene. You stand at the rim of a bowl. A seemingly young girl with red hair and a fire-colored dress shouts from the bottom of the bowl, "Come one! Come all! I am Firefly, and welcome to my circus!" And she disappears, engulfed in a flame.
The bowl doesn't have seats along the sides, but people find places to sit in the uneven rock. This place has existed for over a hundred years, with Firefly ever it's ringmaster. Many of the performers are the same, though some are newer. No one has ever questioned it's existence or the way in which it exists, until now. What modern human couldn't ask, "Why?" And all of these questions are making Firefly angry.
Firefly's Circus is more powerful than the humans above think. Firefly is a vampire, and none of the performers are human either. Every day, Cornhill is one step closer to realizing that, and when they do, who knows what Firefly could unleash on them?
And yet, as the humans become curious, venturing down the tunnel more and more often, friendships could complicate the storm that seems imminent. Or, perhaps, they may just stop it before it could even arrive.
Who are you? And what can you do to relieve the tension, before it snaps?
