The girl ran wildly down the path, never daring to look behind her. Her heart pounded fiercely and she could barely breathe. But if she were to stop for even a second there was a high chance that she would be caught. This thought was her incentive and she ran faster. There was no way she could bear to go back there again. After an hour of running she couldn’t keep going any longer. She collapsed right where she was in the middle of the path and tried to catch her breath. As soon as she could think clearly again she got shakily to her feet and stumbled on. By now she had reached the outskirts of town and as she walked slowly down the path, people began to stare. It was close to midnight but in this strange city people were still hurrying down the street back to their homes.
“Are you alright, love?” One woman asked kindly but the girl just nodded abruptly and continued her wobbling journey down the road. Her pursuers had most likely given up by now but she couldn’t risk stopping yet just in case. But it wasn’t much longer before her mind and body both gave out, leaving her a crumpled heap on the ground.
When the girl woke up, her entire body was stiff and she groaned as she sat up. But her discomfort was quickly replaced with fear as she found herself lying in bed in a room she had never seen before. The room had clean white walls and a chemical smell like a doctor’s office. Yet somehow it felt nothing like the medical rooms in the place she had been in before running away. She got shakily to her feet and walked to the door of the room. She opened it and cautiously peered through. Seeing nothing but an empty corridor she stepped outside and started down the hallway.
“Hello? Is there anyone here..?” She called out, her voice tight from fear. As she explored more and more corridors of the hospital her anxiousness grew. A building this large should not be so empty. There should at least be some doctors, shouldn’t there? She went down a set of stairs that ended in a large space that appeared to be the lobby of the building. And standing in front of the reception desk with their backs to her were two nurses. The girl let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. “Um… Excuse me? Can you please tell me where I am?” As she spoke, the girl walked nervously closer to the two turned backs. Slowly they turned their heads to look at her and the girl stopped in her tracks. She became frozen in terror because the faces looking at her were not human. Their flesh was rotting, their jaws twisted and there were only dark, empty sockets where their eyes should be. The creatures snarled and advanced on the girl with unnatural speed. She burst into action and tried to run but the creatures were too fast. They caught her with ease and pinned her to the ground, ignoring her horrified screams. The girl could smell the stench of their rotting skin, causing her to cry out in fear and begged them to let her go. She begged them not to kill her. The creatures did not listen.
Again the girl woke up, this time screaming for her life. But something was different. This time she could feel no pain and there were other people in the same place as her. Except that they were all in closed glass boxes with their eyes closed. Perhaps they were sleeping... The girl tried to move but found that she couldn’t; she was trapped inside a glass box just like everyone else around her. There were various wires and tubes stuck through her skin and she could see a clear liquid being pumped into her body.
“Hello, is there anyone there?” she called desperately. There was no reply except the beep of a machine coming to life beside her. Her eyes darted to the side and she tried to make out what was written on the screen. She found that if she tried hard enough, she could turn her head just far enough to read the fast appearing text.
