      Hi Book Concierge,

Do not have one favorite memory, although -
I do remember that I walked and trained three of my neighbors dogs every day for a couple hours a day(one to 4 hours) beginning in 7th grade till the end of 8th. I became very attached to one particular dog. My family had to suddenly move to a different state and I became very depressed, as I was broken hearted to leave my dog buddy behind. Turned out that I ended up crying tears of joy-as both the owner and my mother agreed that the dog was mine!

Many years later my sisters and I were visiting the old neighborhood walking with my dog when we hear an unknown lady screaming our dog's name. We had kept my dog's original name. The lady comes running breathlessly out onto the sidewalk and my dog responds favorably-this is a complete understatement-they both went wild with love. All we could do was stand back and watch in utter amazement. The lady and my dog were ecstatic over being reunited - completely absorbed in their dance of unexpected joy -

Turns out the lady was the original owner of my dog-later on after the love fest the lady ran into her house and within two minutes brought out photos of our/my dog in her puppyhood. As we had adopted my dog when she was an adult (approx. 7 yrs. old), the pictures were a precious first look into my dog's previously unknown life and enormously endearing to behold. As far as I knew my dog was a very reserved animal who had eyes only for her present family- or so I had thought! The remarkable display of recognition, memory and affect between the lady and her/my/our dog was absolutely spell-binding to watch-the love was so very evident and powerful it mesmerized us in mid-step- human and animal alike!

I am not sure what the odds were CSJ-it certainly did seem somewhat of an unlikely situation. We are still unsure of my dogs exact breed-she was about 75 lbs and was black and white with a mask-ttp://www.akc.org/breeds/canaan_dog/ or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karelian_Bear_Dog

      BookConcierge,

I have not read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, although I would be interested in reading this book choice. My sister recently explained the book premise to me and it seems to mention Turner's Syndrome- which is one of my interests since my daughter was born with T.S..

      Hi Again BookConcierge!

Your review of - A Christmas Carol - by Charles Dickens interested me-esp. your comment "many centuries ago, Dickens wrote of the long-lasting effects of child neglect on the person now grown to adulthood." I would tend to agree with this perspective. As for disagreeing-I'm not sure if I would be able to "totally" disagree with the insides of most books. Even if I do not agree with what I understand to be the main message of the book,I will be more than likely to find a paragraph or two I am in agreement with-if not-better yet- a clearer understanding of another's views much different than my own and how their views became part of their perspective.

A personal experience I am thinking of-My brother walked into my San Diego, Calif. house one day and remarked upon what I had done to my home-it looked fantastic he exclaimed! He specifically asked if I had bought new furniture. No I answered-somewhat perplexed- as I had done nothing to change or enhance my living space.I figured it looked different to him because he had just gotten back from the Navajo reservation where he was visiting his wife's family.

One of his in-laws homes was a Navajo hogan-which had a dirt floor and sometimes the sheep came into the home to sleep alongside the family. My brother was culture shocked, although he was completely unaware of why his perspective had changed and instead believed the change to be something specific in my living room-well I suppose my living room as a whole could be considered the change-however he never did see it this way.His reaction was interesting to watch- his continuing insistence that I had definitely changed something in the immediate environment - if I hadn't bought new furniture-had I rearranged the furniture ?

It depends -I have had several heart transplants:) San Diego, Calif. is where I presently live as a so-called adult. East Hampton, Port Jefferson,Jackson Heights and Queens, New York --Chinle , Many Farms, Az. These additional areas in the states of New York and Arizona are where I have spent the majority of my childhood-although I did spend quite a bit of my childhood in San Diego, Calif. as well.

      Hi Diana,
The amount of books I read per month varies - hopefully at least one a month-approx. 300 pgs. If I am reading in the upper limits I would be reading 150 pgs a day. I don't read this way consistently day after day-more in fits and spurts. This is a general guesstimate without analyzing my reading stats.on Shelfari. At times I scan books, however I don't count this as reading a book.

Have you read about the savant Kim Peek? He could read two different pages of a book using each eye to read a different page simultaneously. If you google Kim Peek it is awe inspiring how fast he could read with wonderful recall. Also, if you are left eye dominant this can be slightly advantageous for reading speed-in the English language.

That was interesting about Kim Peek and would love to have his wonderful recall. I have always thought I was left eye dominant because I
am left-handed but maybe that doesn't have anything to do with it. This is fascinating...

      Hi CrimeSluethJunkie,

My daughter is left handed-like you.If you want to learn your eye dominance there are simple tests you can do yourself-which are explained on the internet-no fancy equipment needed. I found out my eye dominance since I mentioned to my optometrist that I had noticed I was reading books with one eye completely shut-and I thought to myself-why the heck am I reading with only one eye open when I have two working eyes? The answer was due in part to eye dominance.

Changing the subject a bit, I am right handed but I try to remember to turn left when entering parking lots/garages-as most people are right handed they naturally turn right and there are usually less unoccupied parking spaces available on the right side of the lot/So if you are searching for a parking space try turning left-it may be a faster and easier approach. Also, since you read crime-if you ever are on the trail of a never be good and are not sure which way s/he went during the chase-most likely to the right-unless of course more criminals are left handed-then it may be a different story altogether.

      Wendy,
As a kid I liked the old fashioned rock candy. To satisfy my sweet tooth then and now I've continued to prefer desserts with a certain type of mouth feel- such as ice cream, custards, tapioca, flan, puddings, whipped cream-not so much candy-perhaps chocolate covered mints would be my choice of candy if I have to choose. What of sweet potatos and candied beets - Can I count them as candy? Eye candy is also a favorite!:)

      Hi Wendy,

Yes I do drink coffee-strangely enough how I drink coffee varies-if I am at work I drink black coffee-at home I like organic half and half, organic whole milk or evaporated milk-something creamy in my coffee and when I eat out I like the works- a fancy flavored coffee with a large topping of real whipped cream -none of the sugar substitutes/artificial flavors for me-usually I prefer caffeinated coffee. IHOP Pancakes has good coffee-it won an award of sorts. A mild Breakfast Blend is often to my liking- I decline the stronger flavored coffee as I dislike the taste.

      Hi again Wendy,

How many times have I had my attention riveted by red, green and yellow? Of the three colors my favorite color may very well be green-being given the green light-literally and figuratively - most especially when I am running late to an appt. or work!
Again my favorite colors vary-depending upon if I am dressing for success , admiring a painting in a museum, cheering for my home teams colors, bird-watching,interior decorating, looking under a microscope ect.Obviously-the background colors/circumstances effect/affect my perceptions and attenuation of my favorite three colors.Seasonal colors-fruits and vegetables-Eat your colors!Red,White and Blue for the coming 2012 Fourth of July! I like to mix and match depending upon all sorts of environmental and internal clues and cues.As a child I loved my pet chameleon which was endlessly fascinating due to it's ability to change color as a natural adaptation-a favorite color change of mine, due to it's rarity, is when people blush due to modesty or conscience.

      Wendy,
I need to do a little meta thinking about your question--as I am unsure of what"always" catches my eye in a book cover. Perhaps if the book cover has a person with his/her nose in the book actively reading-this fact-nine times out of ten would draw my attention to the book cover.

So there aren't certain things that you look for in a cover or ones that you stay away from - for example:
If a cover has a half naked very muscular man with long hair - I run away from the book as far as possible!
But I would not kick said man out of my bed (if I weren't happily married) heehee.

      Hi CSJ,

Many people write books nowadays-there is a lot of competition out there! What subject to write about? Popular and influential authors J.K. Rowlings and Suzanne Collins come to mind--perhaps they would be willing to team up and endorse a project proposal. A workshop offered at libraries across America to educate mother's and their children about overcoming hardship through the written word.

"A Book In Two Parts"- The mothers and children's life and successes within themselves and in the outside world due to the encouragement of the Women Writers On Welfare-A ReaLife Hunger Game supported by Welfare Depts. Across the Nation- Libraries Across America, and U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Original works of mothers and/or children would be published/translated by the Library Journal.

Library card holders across America would be given free library internet access to early teasers/trailers and excerpts of Original stories, poems, graphic novels, artwork, photography ect. with bios/photos/aspirations of authors-children and parents alike. A voting application could be added onto library check out stations. For example, in addition to being asked to renew your books you would be asked if you would like to record a vote now for the best original author/illustrator/photographer ect. or be reminded later on your Ebook,Email, text, cell phone ect.

Would be an empowering and evolving project which would build upon itself, such as in a series. Also, free tickets/backstage passes and transportation to the Balboa Park San Diego Junior Theater would be given to San Diego Library card holders who win the free library raffle. A www.realifehungergames original works will be chosen to be performed live on stage by SDJT to "To Inform, Educate, Inspire, and Entertain" San Diego County residents.

In addition, a limited amount of free tickets will be offered at SDJT WillCall for theater goers who show their county/city San Diego library card to gain entrance. Credit for quoted SDCL Mission Statement-http://sdcl.org/about-organization.html For library patrons of San Diego county/city unable to travel to Balboa Park showings due to financial hardship or physical disabilities- free community room SDJT live performances will be held at specified times and local library locations-Need current library card on person for admittance.

Perhaps San Diego Junior Theater could team up with the SDCounty and SDCity libraries to offer a limited summer scholarships program to young adults and children who are the winners of SDJT library raffles-Donation is $1.00 and will be held during the free SDJT library community room performances.
