Hey there! My name is CC. I just stumbled upon this great group, and I see some of my friends here too! Cool!

I LOVE my public library. Wish I could work there. I never (almost never) buy books, but I go to the library on a regular weekly basis.

I LOVE my library's on-line catalog, where I find fantastic books. If my library doesn't have it, I can usually find it through the InterLibrary Loan System. I read around 200 books a year, and I especially love reading the old ones that my library still has. I love history, bios/autobios, memoirs, travel, art, non-fiction on a wide variety of subjects, with a bit of fiction, poetry, plays, and essays thrown in.

I LOVE my hometown librarians. They know me quite well, since it's my third summer there (as well as my third year on Shelfari). Before that, I didn't read very much --- now I'm seldom seen without a book in hand. Several of the librarians are very interested in my reading. They say most people go for the new books, up front, but I always head for the stacks when I come in. I've brought to light quite a few old treasures they never knew were back there.

I think it's great to have a group for people who love libraries, so thanks for letting me in.

Hey! My name is Carol. I joined Shelfari in March at the suggestion of my fabulous local library - Willard in Battle Creek, Michigan, and have just recently joined this group - others like myself that would live at the library if it was possible.

I found myself going back to the same authors that I had read for years. I wanted to know what other people were reading, what they liked and disliked. I use my library's on-line catalog and have found some books that are the same type as what I have read and authors that write similar to my old tried and true favorites, but this website has been a gift from the "Book Gods"!

I don't buy books very often - space for one thing - expense for another but I visit the library once a week. My 90 year old mother reads more books and different types of books than I do if that is even possible. If she would use the computer she would be on this site also.

Like all of you, I LOVE books and can't remember a time that I couldn't read. (Thank you Mom). I have certainly enjoyed this site.

Hi, I'm Genealogylady. I have to admit, I wasn't always that interested in the library and for years avoided it. It wasn't until I could not find a book at my local used bookstore, that I thought of the library. Once inside, it all came back to me! The love of spending hours looking for books and coming home with armloads and devouring them only to come back the next week and start all over again.

While I'm still trying to read books I've bought over the years on my physical bookshelf, I haven't bought any new ones and the ones I do read on my physical bookshelf, I donate after I've read them.

I love reading all types of genres (science fiction, fantasy, and mystery being my favorites).

There is a wide range of readers here, all genres, you will fit in.

Hi my name is Jennifer and I gotta say that I owe who I am to the library system. I grew up very poor and there was never any money for books, so the library was my lifeline to other worlds. I became a vivacious reader devouring whatever I could get my hands on. In turn, I became a speed reader and I joke that the reason I still visit the library is because I can not afford to buy all the books I like to read! In all seriousness, I believe the library is one of the best uses of taxpayer dollars and have tried to instill a love of the library in my children and grandchildren. Even in this digital age, I still use the services of the library and encourage others to do the same. We have got to protect this valuable resource.

On a separate note, like everyone else, I read a variety of genres, but I especially like Christian fiction, historical and "far out" stuff like Dekker, Peretti, and Heitzmann as well as contemporary authors such as Koontz, King, J.D. Robb, Grisham, and Baldacci. I am looking forward to finding new authors to read whenever I am caught up on my regular authors.

Just joined a book club at my church. We read mostly Christian fiction, too, but have just finished an Agatha Christie which was good. Try Dogwood by Chris Fabry. All of our members gave it 5 stars. I highly recommend it. The library is a great source for readers, like myself, who love to read but are also "cheap". Sooner or later you can find any book you want at your local library. You might have to wait a while for a bestseller, but there is always something else to read while you wait for it.

Hi my name is Nancy and just joined this group. I just love going to the library, been a member since I was a little kid. I work fulltime and therefore only have time to go once a week to the library. If it was up to me I would go every day. I am from Holland, I like to read Dutch and English books. My library has a good selection of English books. If my library does not have a book which I really want to read then I will buy it.

Hello! I was searching groups and your group name pulled me in. There are a bunch of people from my other groups here, so it must be a pretty good group. My daughters (12 and 3) are at the library every Saturday. I volunteer by cleaning and organizing a different shelf each week. I use Shelfari quite often for the series books. We also donate just about every book we buy and read to the library. Unfortunately our library isn't very big and doesn't have many recent books. Hope to find some new books to read by joining.

I'm Leslie and I just discovered your site through another member. I've been spending time at my local libraries from the time my mother would let me go on my own. While I'm relying much more now on recommendations of trusted Shelfari members and reserving books on-line, I still love wandering through the stacks. I confess to a fondness for the remaining old libraries and will be a little sorry when they've all been replaced or updated.

      Hi Leslie,
Glad to see you joining this site. I agree with you about the old libraries or just libraries in general. I love the smell and the feel of actual pages. E-readers are nice and they are convienient but they will never be like holding a book in your hand and turning the pages. I follow you on several other sites and am looking forward to seeing what you are reading on this one also. I'm not good about listing all the books I check out every week but I am faithful in placing the book I am currently reading in the "We're reading" shelf here as well as the "We've read" shelf when I finish it. I've even given some thougth to starting a group for my local library here in Battle Creek. Welcome and I hope you find many, many good books from everyone here.

Thanks for the welcome. Shelfari has completely changed my reading habits. I rarely wander around aimlessly looking for something to catch my eye because I've read so many reviews that led me to books or authors I wouldn't have otherwise considered. Now my only problem is knowing I'll die before I read everything wonderful out there. So many books, so little time.

It's great to see familiar faces (er, avatars) on other sites. Hiya mef!

Hi Leslie! Welcome to the group and thanks for joining. I try to avoid going to the library because I usually walk out with more books than I can carry or read in 3 weeks (said as she looks at the 10 books on her nightstand). However, I am a self-professed e-reader addict so going online is also dangerous (6 library books on my e-reader).

Yes, we are all going to leave behind huge piles of books unread. There are worse things.

Anyway, I frequently use my lunch break to read. I have been managing to get a chapter read each time during my lunch. So that works.

Hi! I grew up just about living in the library. My family didn't have much money so buying books was a luxury, but we were (and are) all avid readers so the library was a godsend in our lives. We also moved around alot, but wherever we lived we joined the library right off. I can still remember the libraries of my childhood--the reading rooms with long tables and newspapers hung over bars, the children's rooms (usually in the basement), the old bindings and the smell of the books.

I live in a town of about 12,000 in Vermont with an incredible public library. Not only does it have a stellar collection, it also has art exhibits and all manner of public events--shared readings, talks about all sorts of topics, and more. I am grateful for what our librarians do for the town with tighter and tighter budgets.

I can't seem to go to the library without checking something out, even if I already have a stack of books awaiting me.

    Greetings from the American Midwest!

I am new to Shelfari and on-line groups but after reading some of the posts here, I think I found a good group to join. I grew up in a small town and our library, which was just one room in our little city hall, meant the world to me. The adventure and escape from the trials and tribulations of childhood was always just a short walk and a stack of books away. I would spend many a night, under the covers, reading by flashlight so as not to disturb my parents in the next room. Neither of my parents were readers so they could never quite understand the joy I got from books. I now live in the city of Saint Louis, Missouri and we are blessed with a wonderful Library system. Our Central Library, a marvelous 100 year old building designed by Cass Gilbert, has just undergone a $70 million renovation. I only wish I could spend as much time in this grand old library, wandering the stacks, the marble halls, and the ornate reading rooms, as I did the little one room library of my childhood.

Looking forward to sharing more library stories and book reading with all of you fellow library lovers here on Shelfari!

    Hi,

I'm Rene' and I feel like I was born in a library. I don't remember not be able to read. I was the kid who got in trouble for reading Gone With the Wind under the covers with a flashlight when I was supposed to be sleeping (5th grade). I found Shelfari and have been using it mainly to keep up with what I've read. Otherwise, I read so many books so quickly that I forget the names of the books and had a tendency to check out something only to find that I'd read it three weeks before. So, with Shelfari (and the other site Goodreads), I can keep my life straight. I'm a bookaholic and go into a panic if I don't have a book and the library's going to be closed. I'm so thankful for our library having downloadable books now.

    Hi!

Wandering Shelfari when I found this lovely group so I thought I would join :) I've always been a big reader - as I never tend to re-read (except in special circumstances) I hardly see the point of owning books, so I spend quite a bit of time in libraries. I worked in my university library during college and now I live very close to my city's library.

I love the feeling of walking down the stacks and the chance that I could find a new favorite book. I love wandering their new book section - books that would could be expensive to buy, and getting to take them home for free. I love going in to pick up only one book, and end up coming out with 5, just because I found so many others that looked so enjoyable. I love being able to use the ILL to get whatever books I want. I love knowing that when I got a book, so many others have shared in the joy of reading that book as well.

Glad to have found other library connoiseurs!

This group was meant for me. I have spent much time in the library and received immense joy from it. I have often told my friends that had I not gone into my profession, from which I am now retired, I would have been a librarian. I have always found a certain amount of peace and contentment in the library, and go there sometimes, and just sit in the reading area and read for a while, or sit and relax. If you think that sounds "dumb", try it sometime and you will see that I am right. I also now check out e books on my Nook, but I still check the "old fashioned real book", too.

I feel the same way about libraries. Wherever I've lived, I have always found the library to be a refuge as well as a source of books and more (though for me, mainly it's books). I, too, would have liked to be a librarian. I'm planning to retire soon and am going to volunteer at the library and also see if there are any part-time jobs there for folks who don't have an MLS.

    Hello!

I'm currently working on my Master's in the hopes of eventually becoming a librarian (or archivist) of some sort. Although I'm thinking of eventually working in an academic or research library, I still truly appreciate local public libraries, too! Because I've been moving around so much in the past few years, I've been accumulating public library cards (I recently remembered that I still have the one from my study abroad in England, as well). Each library has a special flavor to it, which is awesome, and they definitely give you a feel for the community.

Looking forward to seeing what conversations stem from this group!

Hi, Inclover! Welcome to the group from another librarian.

In library school, I thought I wanted to work in a public library, but initially did contracts at a couple of special libraries (a law library, then a youth employment center), before ending up (for the past 11 years!) at an academic library. I think I'd still like to try a public library at some point, but it might depend on the position. (I'm not big on managerial stuff, and that's mostly what seems to come up, unfortunately, at least at my public library.)

In my younger, much poorer days, I spent a lot of time at the library just because it was someplace to go that didnt cost anything. Hubby would come home from work and stay with the kids while I had 'me' time at the library.

    Hello!
I just ran across your group at random and it sounds like my kind of place! I LOVE books, especially fantasy, YA, and a little science fiction. Even if I didn't work at a library I'd be at one all the time! It's always nice to find people who love libraries as much as I do!

    Hi,

I'm Oliver's mom, Lynda. I've recently retired and Oliver and I spend a lot of time browsing and reading books. I can't remember a time when I didn't love going to the library. It's a magical world where you can find stories you never even knew existed. One of the greatest things in the world is the ability to get a library card and borrow books. It doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, a fast reader or a slow reader, interested in romance or science fiction, the library embraces us all.

We're looking forward to joining the group and joining some discussions once we get a little more familiar with Shelfari.

Hi everyone. I just stumbled onto this group and knew it was the one for me. Libraries have been part of my life forever. At one time, I purchased books and found it difficult to part with them. Now I mostly use the library so find no problem returning them. Some of my favorite authors are Maeve Binchy, Elizabeth George, James Gripando, and Dick Francis. I belong to a book club that meets once a month. Through this book club I have read many books I might not have chosen on my own.

I am new to this group, but a frequent poster to the Bibliophile group. I see a lot of the same faces here, and hope you all don't think I am stalking you!

My name is Rochelle, I love to read, and since I have retired, I have my nose in a book constantly. Ever since I learned to read I have been a patron of a library and a consistent visitor. It is a tremendous resource, that doesn't cost a penny and provides hours and hours and...well, you get the picture...of entertainment.

Hi. I'm Michelle. I'm new to shelfari and have come to really like it. I was in the Navy from 2003 to 2007. During that time, I constantly used my ship's library. They had an honest system where you swap one book for another... or just take them for keeps... they get new books coming very often.

Before I got my Kindle, my grandfather and I would check out books weekly. But now that we both have kindles, we use Overdrive.com (I consider that to still be the library too). I currently have the max 10 items checked out... well, I have always been checking out the max amount. :)
