    1. Most books read:

    1. Suspense and Sensibility by Carrie Bebris - This is a take-off of Jane Austen, with supernatural elements.
    2. Indigo's Star by Hilary McKay - This is a book in a series about a family that works, despite a dysfunctional mom and a mostly absent dad. It is a YA book about the power of friendship and of resiliency.
    3. A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future by Daniel H. Pink - Talks about the importance of Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play and Meaning in today's world.
    4. The Summer Book by Tove Jansson - I enjoyed this gentle book of the love between a grandmother and granddaughter. Beautifully written.
    5. A Jane Austen Education: How Six Novels Taught Me About Love, Friendship, and the Things That Really Matter by William Deresiewicz - This memoir provided an interesting perspective of Jane Austen's writing.
    6. Glamorous Illusions by Lisa Bergren - a historical fiction story of a family taking the Grand Tour. It was o.k., but I will not read the rest of the series.
    7. Sixty Lights by Gail Jones - Victorian woman photographer - great story!

    2. Most pages read:

Can't I just read and apply them to categories as I go. Or do you need declarations?
Will post along for most books, most pages, most countries, I guess.

Just hard to get excited over volumes. The countries is stimulating, and relates to Olympics a bit. Might get more players if you could sell it to Play Book Tag. (Or maybe promoting it there, we could grow Crossroads membership). It's just that I was thinking of being more active on Canada site and exploring writers from vaious provinces (i.e. all in one country) obviously not enough membership there to get a lot of action like the 50 state challenge at Play Book Tag.

Seems unlikely you guys could get excited about books covering various sports, but inclusion in a book wouldn't require it to dominate (e.g. characters might play golf or tennis as part of plot).

As some of you know, I am embarked on a retail adventure--renting a shop space and starting an arts & crafts collective with a group of friends. This will, I'm sorry to say, drastically cut into my reading time, so I need to aim for Most Poems. I'm going to kick off with Garrison Keillor's wonderful anthology--GOOD POEMS, a book I've meandered around in from time to time, but never read cover to cover.

Good for you, Patsy. I thought about giving you some competition in the poetry race, but I learned long ago that I can't read poetry that way. I'd like to because my poetry tbr is as large as the rest of my library. But poems just don't go down the way fiction does with me. I need to take them one at a time and reread and contemplate and look at the structure. That's why I like Writer's Almanac and poets.org. They send me one poem a day. If it speaks to me, I can keep going back to it and keep it like a shell found on the beach.

Maybe I should create an individual catagory; Fewest Poems Read Obsessively

I agree with you, Judith (and I love your shell analogy). I like to read poems at intervals and slowly "digest" them--rather than scarfing them down like potato chips ;-)! But because of time constraints right now, if I wanted to compete here, I had to choose some short stuff that I could read in snatches here and there.

But I am bookmarking poems as I go--planning to revisit them later and give them their due attention.

One thing that amused me in GOOD POEMS was GK's introduction--in which he praises poets one might expect him to admire, but also pokes fun at some sacred figures like T. S. Eliot, whom he calls "the great stuffed owl whose glassy eyes mesmerized the English profs of my day."

Also--I am (still) reading MOBY DICK ... enjoying it, but moving s-l-o-w-l-y on the voyage.

I like your FPRO category and think that you should post poems that are "keepers" and share them with us all.

Going for reading the most books reminds me of a reading contest the library had when my son was young. He could get a token for prizes for each book he read. He quickly realized that he'd get a lot more tokens if he continued to read picture books instead of the chapter books he had been reading. I was delighted that he was able to spot the loophole but not thrilled that he was "regressing" in his reading.

Jill-- As a former librarian, I can attest to the ease with which kids figure out the shortcuts. We eventually switched to a rule that required Summer Reading participants to keep track of total TIME spent reading, rather than the number of books. Of course, this figure, too, could have been bogus, since no proof was required. But at least we tried to send a message that the reading experience was more important than "bagging" a certain number of titles. Still, there is something to be said for your son's competitive spirit!

Our library still does time spent reading for both adult and child.

I never participate in summer reading because I've really no clue about time spent.
      15 minutes here....longer there....and usually it's stolen time.
I don't want to be tense trying to remember the number of minutes.

I guess my methods are my own and most people there don't read in that manner

My local library had challenges when I was young but they were pretty strict on the no cheating though.

They used to pick a selection of books and you would get a star for every book you read. You had to answer questions on the book correctly first though.

A big standing O for BnB and the great prizes! I love my poetry medal :D !! And a hint for those who plan to participate in any form of the Olympics in 2014: just sign on for a category in which you are the sole competitor ... pretty much guarantees gold.

Congratulations to all for a good, clean, foul-free game!

Delightful to see the range of events. Most mile for Story was outrageous--]33K!

I only read 4 books, so Deborah would have bronze with 5.

Appreciate the effort you must have had tracking down stuff for verification.

Michael, I was surprised that I read more books than you but look at the books you were reading while I was in mystery mode.

Loved my prize, thank you. The fun part is that I get to enjoy everyone else's prizes despite my lame effort.

Judith, I thought it was perfect that I googled bronze book world and got a child reading a book on the globe. I'd actually love that sculpture ~ a perfect teacher one.

I'm proud to know all you world class readers and applaud Story and BnB for competeing, winning medals and being able to run the olympics. If I could I would give you trips to any site of Olympic competitions for your efforts.
