***This discussion has spoilers. If you have not yet read First Drop of Crimson, please turn back. We wouldn’t want to spoil the story for you.***

    Overview:
The night is not safe for mortals. Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows—her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield—and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family's past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness—and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who lusts for a taste of her.
He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human—even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the nightmare together . . .
Because once the first crimson drop falls, they will both be lost.

    Primary Characters:
Spade: Once Baron Charles DeMortimer in England. A Master vampire, and is 256 years old.

Denise MacGregor: Denise is Cat's best friend and has known about the undead since Cat saved her from an attack. Was widowed a year ago during an attack by vampires.

Nathanial: An ancestor of Denise's who made a deal with the devil, so to speak. His deal with Raum, a corporeal demon, sends Denise on a chase to find him in the underground world of vampires.

Catherine Crawfield: "Cat" , Denise's best friend

Mencheres: One of the oldest and most powerful vampires around. He is Spade's maker.

    Emma: Vampire. Spade's "housekeeper"

Bones: "Crispin Phillip Arthur Russell III" - Master Vampire who is married to Cat. He, Ian and Spade were all prisoners sent to the New World before they became vampires.

Oliver: A human servant for Spade.

Giselda: Spade's late human lover. She died in an attack during the Franco-Prussian War.

Alten: Vampire. Spade's business manager and second in command

Randy MacGregor: Denise's late husband. He died in the vampire wars while staying with Cat and Bones over New Years'.

    Paul: Denise's cousin

Raum: A corporeal demon who has the ability to shape shift.

Black Jack: A vampire drug dealer residing in Las Vegas.

Fabian du Brac: A ghost who befriended Cat. Only the undead can see ghosts and they usually ignore them.

    Webb: Master Vampire

I gave this book 5 stars, mostly for Spade. Denise annoyed me at times. She finally came into her own toward the end. Even though this book is toward the bottom of my list of favs of this series, I still enjoyed the story with the continuing characters of the series.

Many seem to have found Denise annoying and I can see why. I was sympathetic to her as she had a lot thrown at her pretty quickly...losing her husband and being possessed by a demon. Plus, she had to come to terms with the knowledge that her best friend was a vampire. When she had her first transformation, it had to have been frightening. All this forced me to give her a little slack:)

Who couldn't love Spade? I've always liked him as Bones' mate but I loved how he took care of Denise.

I loved Spade and Denise.. Plus you had the other characters making apearances. I actually liked Ian in this book, he had me cracking up a few times. I was happy when Cat and Bones came to help as well. I loved the whole plot with the drug for vampires, coming from a human with demon essence in them.. I hope we get to see more of Denise and Spade, especially to see how Denise handles being a demon. She had to grow and overcome so much, which I think she did in this book. Who wouldn't, for Spade? :-)

Without giving anything away or a spoiler, Denise and Spade do appear again in future books.

I couldn't have been more surprised when it turned out that Denise was a demon. That poor woman had been through the ringer but Spade was a nice payoff.
