Finished Timeless Desire, a book I received from the publisher to review for our blog. I accepted it because it had an interesting premise with a foot in so many genres (time travel, historical romance, contemporary fiction) and this is a new author to me. I had a bit of a slow start as the beginning was a little confusing but when it all flattened out for me, this turned out to be a really interesting story.

Now starting the novella, When We Touch.

Finished Big Sky Country and was a little underwhelmed. It was entertaining but the romance conflict was fairly contrived. I'm hoping the next book, Big Sky Mountain, which I'm now starting, is a bit better.

I finished Can't Buy Me Love last night and it was a very intense contemporary romance. The book description made it seem like more of a lighthearted romp so it was (for me) a pleasant surprise to dig into some pretty complicated characters with some serious issues. I've now started the next book in the series, Can't Hurry Love and am already enjoying it.

Finished Can't Hurry Love and loved it, more than the first book and I didn't think I would. The main character wasn't all that likable in the first story but endeared herself in this one.

You must be counting down the days to August 21st. :-D My sister is pregnant, but not due until the end of Feb, so she's in the "fun" exhausted/barfy stage. I visited her last week and she's having a much harder time this time and that's with only one 3-year old. I can't believe you survived morning sickness with three little boys! :-D Happy Reading! I think you'll really enjoy The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie.

@Liz - So glad to be out of the exhausted/barfy stage, it can be rough. Unfortunately the exhausted state comes back in the 3rd trimester. Just nature's way of preparing us for many sleepless nights, I guess.

@Erin - Congrats on the new niece!

Finished Thirteen and I feel utterly depressed that I've just read the last book in this series. In terms of the conclusion of the series I thought it was pretty good. I was a bit disapponted that for the final three books we basically just followed Savannah around as she solved mini mystery after mini mystery (even if the mysteries were interesting ones). I loved the action at the very end though and I also appreciated how Armstrong wrapped up all of the main characters' storylines in the final chapter just to let her readers know what they'd be up to next.

Traceyseb, I actually read A Discovery of Witches last year and liked it a lot. I think I even marked it as a favorite; we'll see if that holds up. :) It's very well written, the world building was creative and all the characters were well developed and interesting. It's also a great love story, but beware, there no HEA; it's more like a UF in that respect. I hope you enjoy it!

@Jonetta, thanks! I may still add a couple more books. I need to check out what the group reads are this month in my various groups and what ROR challenge books I still need to read. :)

I'm excited for the move, but not excited about all the stuff I need to go through before I can move. I have hundreds of books (literally) and I'm moving from a one bedroom apt where I live alone to a two bedroom w/ bonus room house I'll be sharing with two other people, so there won't be as much storage space. Gotta be brutal with my books and all my other stuff.... :(

I think you'll really like A Discovery of Witches, Erin. I just got notified that the second book is waiting for me to pick up from the library. I'm excited to find out what happens next, but I really wanted to listen to the A Discovery of Witches audiobook first. Between my vacation and watching the Olympics my reading has really slowed down the last couple weeks!

I wound up adding a bunch more books to my reading plan. I forgot that I had a lot of books to read for the ROR Summer Challenge and none of them are available as audiobooks.

@Tracyseb - So far I really like Eloisa's Fairy Tale books. Haven't heard much about her other books yet. Have you read others by her?

Jonetta & Kris - I've been working my way through Toni Blake's Destiny series and Michele Albert's Avalon series. I first book in the Destiny series was One Reckless Summer and I loved it. Wasn't as crazy about the second book, but the third one was pretty good. Holly Lane is the 4th book in the series. Haven't heard too much about this book.

The Avalon series is kind of hit or miss for me. They are very loosely connected, so you really don't have to read them in order. Hide in Plain Sight is the 5th book. The hero is a mercenary who will do pretty much anything to get the job done. Kind of reminds me of Anne Stuart's dark heroes, but he is not at all willing to kill innocents which makes him much more human. The heroine is well written. She hasn't had any TSTL moments and holds her own with the hero. I haven't finished the book yet and hope she holds true till the end.

I have not read anything else by James yet, just the Eloisa's Fairy Tales series... But I really like the series too, I just have the newest one out to still read, The Ugly Dutchess..

I did get a few books from her Desperate Dutchesses series from a recent book sale.. I plan on starting that series soon.

Not quite as good as Virgin River Erin but I still like them. I think what struck me right away about the first Cedar Cove book was that the heroine was older. She was a judge with grown children. I'm getting older myself and I appreciated the change of pace. There aren't very many books that feature a woman love interest over the age of 40. Plus there was a secondary romance within that I also enjoyed and very well written. I haven't been to visit Cedar Cove in a long time and I've missed it. I think the last book I read was 6 Rainier Drive. I read these long before Virgin River and I had nothing to compare them too as far as a series set in a small town goes. I'm probably going to have to read them all over again for a refresher before taking on #7. I'd recommend you give 16 Lighthouse Rd a go. Even if you definitely don't think it comes close to VR you'll find it a decent read anyway.

Thanks, Christina. I think I will give it a try. My library has the whole series. I have read some Macomber before but it was before I really got into romance. I used to love her books but have wondered how they would hold up now that I read more in the genre. Guess I'll find out! Have you read Macomber's Dakota trilogy? That was my very first small town romance experience and I loved the series.

finished Smooth Talking Stranger by Lisa Kleypas ★★★★1/2. I thought Jack really was trying too hard and a bit controlling at first and Ella's jumping to conclusions regarding who her nephew's father really was got a bit annoying but over all Jack won me over and there was a big scene towards the end that I really felt Ella's emotions. Her heartbreak and then potential devastation during the last few chapters were so well written I felt them myself. I really do hope she writes Joe's book. An almost perfect book and I really wish these books were not written in the first person because I think this trilogy would show Lauren that there really are great contemporary romances out there and she would love them. Is that weird that I'm always on the look out for books not written in the first person so I can recommend them to you Lauren?

I also finished Sweet Talk by Julie Garwood and was disappointed in it ★★★1/2. The suspense part of the plot was actually pretty good. I really liked how the book opened too. Somewhere along the romance part though I wasn't fully invested. Olivia comes across way too logical but her personality really doesn't support her inner conversations. For example....Grayson kissed her for the first time and it was fireworks for both of them. He then left and didn't contact her for 2 or 3 months. Her logic was something along the lines of "oh he must be busy with being an FBI agent and all." and then she was fine. Ok, it was just a kiss, I can live with the logic. But after they had sex for the first time and he doesn't call for a few weeks she then used the same logic explaining away why he never even called. She didn't react like any woman I've ever know. Grayson was extremely heavy handed with telling Olivia what to do and I didn't like that. She didn't quite fall into the TSTL category but maybe that was because Grayson was all up in her kool-aid telling her she was not going out but was going to stay in her apartment like a good little girl. I have so much more to point out on what annoyed me unfortunately. But this book wasn't all bad. Like I said the suspense part of the plot was interesting and I really got into Grayson and his partner's investigation in addition to Olivia's job as an IRS attorney. I did like Grayson's partner Ronan though. I'm looking forward to Ronan and Collings's romance.

Disappointing for sure. I love Garwood and know she can write a good romance which is one reason why she didn't get 4 stars from me. What did you think about the Popsicle part? I thought it was juvenile, like something a junior high girl would do. And who the heck uses a plate for Popsicles anyway?

Juvenile is dead on as a description of that scene. And, to top it off, Grayson walks out and isn't heard from for a week!

Totally agree Sweet Talk was not a great romance. I would be stretching it a bit to even say it was a good romance. Grayson was always leaving (understandably so...he was an FBI agent) but he wouldn't call for one week, two weeks or in the case of after their first kiss over 2 months. And she was OK with it! ARGH!

Gabaldon has a keen sense of writing heart warming and heart wrenching scenes as while as infiltrating many humorous moments as well.

Just read your review, Kris. It sounds similar to how I was feeling when I read it but I didn't end up finishing. I really enjoyed the concept and had high hopes. My biggest problem with the portion I read was, like you said, how weak the heroine was. I couldn't stand how she deperately, endlessly chased after Daniel who treated her so poorly. Disappointing :(

I just finished listening to this and LOVED it. The narrator was perfect, but the story was a blast. Enjoy!

Me too! Though I did stay up until 3 in the morning to finish it (the day before big move day part three). Totally worth it. :-D

Well, all my stuff is moved into the new place and moved out of the old place. Now I have to find a place to put all my stuff. It's different this time, because I have roommates, so a lot of my stuff is redundant -- we don't need two sets of dishes or silverware, etc... I'm so glad I have the three day weekend to work on some of that stuff!

I feel really good about the move. I think it's going to be a really good fit. My roommates are great so far (I've been living in the new place for a week now). It's so nice to have people to talk to when I get home -- I forgot how nice that is! I just have to work on making my room look more like a bedroom and less like a storage locker. :)

I'm glad that it went so well! And that's great news about your having good roommates. Being on your own alone has its merits but having company you like when you come home can edge that out sometimes. I'm confident you'll get everything organized in good time.

Thanks! I was a little worried about having roommates again after being on my own for so long, but it's been great. My roommate Melissa loves to cook, so I don't have to worry about that and when I came home from work the other day, my roommate Aaron had put my new Ikea bookshelf together for me. How awesome is that? They're going out of town tomorrow, but when they come back, I'm taking them both out to a really nice dinner!

Water for elephants by Sara Gruen. Had this book on my TBR pile for over a year, time to start reading it!

I really loved this book.. My book had actual circus pictures at the start or end of each chapter... It really helped to set you back into that time and atomsphere.. I loved the movie too...

My book does not have the circus pictures :-( For some reason I watched the film first, which I really enjoyed! The book is better so far.
