Ink: I'm not sure Anathem is the best place to start with NS but... you are pretty well read so I predict you'll be all right with it. Like I say, be prepared for a slow start & don't give up on it too soon. Another caveat; he is a very, very smart guy and that comes through in his writing -- sometimes to the detriment of keeping the story moving forward. The digressions into minutiae can become mind-numbing at times and is one of my peeves with Stephenson. Nonetheless, he does eventually get to the point, (IOW... feel free to skim as needed).
Halo: Anathem, I thought was a quality story. I liked Snow Crash too but, (for me), it had a very Stephen King type of ending. Big, unwieldy, unfocused, unsatisfying, are all terms that come to mind when describing how that book wrapped up. I kept seeing 'Waterworld' with Michael Bay 'splosions as I was finishing it. Probably not the best of associations... and it might just have been my mindset at the time. It's been years since I read it. Should probably leaf through it again soon.
My personal favorite by Stephenson is The Diamond Age, or A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer. Neo-victorian future yarn with nanotech. It's a weirdly cool book.
