What is your favourite opening line of a book?

There are plenty of famous ones, but I've always been partial to Timeline by Michael Crichton: "He should never have taken that shortcut."

    Ominous!

Also, if you don't have a favourite one, I'd be intrigued to know the first line of the book you're reading now and whether you think it's a good opening gambit or not.

"It is quite incredible how a bus - a simple, red, London bus - can change your life."

From Yes Man. I just love it. It's full on British and although relevant to the book oddly true how the oddest things can go changing your life!

"My fathers's family name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Philip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip." Opening to Great Expectations, have never read it but it's one of those on that list of books I think I probably should've read. Enjoying it so far.

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." - "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien
"There was no possibility of taking a walk that day." - "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Brontë

I can't chose between those two. The both of them have just always stayed with me for some reason I've even written them down from memory, without consulting the actual books - go figure.

"They say that the prospect of being hanged in the morning concentrates a man's mind wonderfully;"

Terry Pratchett - Going Postal. I could probably pick any Pratchett from the shelf and they would be worth quoting, I love the way he writes.
