Book Discussion - Kill and Tell by Linda Howard

    Save Changes Cancel
***SPOILER ALERT*** THIS IS AN OPEN DISCUSSION ABOUT THE BOOK. PLEASE CLOSE THIS TOPIC IF YOU HAVEN'T READ KILL AND TELL.

    Description
Still reeling from her mother's recent death, Karen Whitlaw is stunned when she receives a package containing a mysterious notebook from the father she has barely seen since his return from the Vietnam War over twenty years ago. Unwilling to deal with her overwhelming emotions, Karen packs the notebook away, putting it—and her father—out of her mind, until she receives a shocking phone call. Her father has been murdered on the gritty streets of New Orleans.
Homicide dectective Marc Chastain considers the murder nothing more than street violence against a homeless man, and Karen accepts his judgement—at first. But she changes her mind when her home is burglarized and accidents begin to happen. All at once, she faces a chilling realization: whoever killed her father is now after her. Desperate for answers, Karen retrieves the only think that links her to her father—the notebook he had sent months before. Inside its worn pages, she makes an unsettling discovery: her father had been a sniper in Vietnam and the notebook contains a detailed account of each one of his kills. Now running for her life, Karen entrusts the book and its secrets to Marc Chastain. Together they unravel a disturbing story of politics, power, and murder—and face a killer who will stop at nothing to get his hands on the kill book.

The story opens with the narrative from Dexter Whitlaw's. perspective. Was it helpful in understanding him and why he might have been murdered?  Why or why not?

I liked hearing his story, it gave an opening for what the men were searching for and how Medina played a part in the story as well as making Dexter feel real.

I liked how it started. It gave you murder up front and let you meet the victim. It made it more real than when you don't know the victim.

It seemed to set the stage for the story, which worked for me. I got a sense of who he was and Rick Medina, knowing that there was some type of conspiracy afoot.

It pulled me right in from the start. I wanted to know who wanted Dexter dead and who double-crossed Rick Medina.

Karen was estranged from her father for most of her life. What was your opinion of her reaction to the package she received from him? Should she have been more curious?

I think I would of been more curious but I understand why she wasn't -she had a lot of anger towards him. And at the time she didn't know he had died, maybe if she had she would have been more curious.

I was not surprised by her reaction. I probably would have done the same thing. He had never given her anything of value before, so there was no reason to be curious.

That package would have haunted me as it came from a man who she wanted as a father but who abandoned her. I would have felt that maybe I'd learn something about him.

He went into the meeting already expecting her to be cold about her fathers death because of previous experiences. I think that was wrong. Not everyone has the same story and he should have given her the benefit of the doubt.

He's a good detective in all other respects and I expected him to sit back and observe before forming an opinion about her. This felt a bit contrived to create an initial conflict.

I think he'd been a Homicide Detective long enough to know that family's work through their grief in different ways. I was surprised when he jumped to those conclusions about Karen.

Carl Clancy mistakenly burned down the house that Karen had recently sold. What are your thoughts about his inability to discern that she no longer lived there? Should he have been able to figure this out or was it plausible that he wouldn't have known?

I think he should have paid attention to his surrounds as well as researched Karen more, at least know what she looks like so that when he saw the couple in the photo he would have known something wasn't right

He was suppose to be a professional, so he really should have done better. Like Donna said, if he had known Karen better and paid more attention to his surroundings, he would have known that she no longer lived there.

This felt like a weak plot point as he was searching the house for Dexter's book and should have found mail and other papers for the new owners. Plus, he should have known what Karen looked like. Clancy was known to be one of the best and this was really sloppy research.

I agree with everyone. A professional is going to have more information about his mark. He should have been wondering why there was so much paperwork with another person's name on it.

Karen eventually became emotional about her father's death. Was this realistic given her relationship, or lack of one, with her father? Why or why not?

As I had a similar relationship with my father before he passed away I think her reaction was very realistic. Although she disliked him she now had lost any chance to know him and he was her last link to her late mother, which would have added to her emotion. As well I am sure she had a lot of questions she wanted to ask him.

Donna, that's a great point about the connection to her mother. I hadn't thought about that. Melissa, there's that curiosity I thought she should have had when she got the package. Maybe knowing he was now dead was the trigger.

The whole romance issue bugged me. There was too much in my opinion. I agree with Karen's reaction the morning after though. Marc's change in attitude would have frightened me as well. I was also thinking that Karen fell for him because she was upset about her dad and he was available. There really wasn't much there to make it feel real from either of them.

I thought the whole romance was kind of sudden. Marc starts out disliking her, but an hour later he is planning how he will get her into bed. Karen is on edge and grieving for her family. I can see her rethinking her sudden decision to spend the night with Marc.

I thought their relationship escalated pretty quickly even though I understood why that happened for Karen. She was emotionally vulnerable and alone. Marc's transformation was a bit harder to swallow. While I get why she had cold feet, Karen bolting the way she did was a bit odd.

What worked was everything culminated there with all those involved showing up to expose their agendas. What didn't work was John Medina showing up late. It didn't make sense, especially since he was supposed to have the skills of his Dad. He should have been there before Marc got shot.

I would have liked a little more mystery/suspense. The page count on this book was a little low at around 300 pages. I think an additional 50 pages of suspense could have helped it out.

Well, we knew the Senator was trying to hide something that would bring him down. Obviously it was a murder since it was in Dexter's kill book and he was blackmailing the Senator. I actually didn't think about it being his older brother. I thought it was a good twist.

I found it interesting and sensed a whiff of something related to his brother throughout the story so by the time the twist came, it was more of an AHA moment. Did I miss why Dexter agreed to kill William? That was never really clear to me.

I just assumed the price was right for Dexter to kill William. He was a gun for hire and that is how he made his living. I don't know what made him turn around and blackmail the senator. I think that might hurt business.

Ok, that's what left me hanging. Why did he agree to do it? That still feels unanswered to me. If he was a mercenary without regard to his assignments, why was this one different for him?

Maybe he wasn't given the whole story when he agreed to the hit. William was killed in Vietnam, right? Maybe Dexter was told that William was working against US interests in the war and needed to be removed. Later he found out who funded the hit and put the whole thing together. Whatever the scenario, it was never made clear in the book.

I liked both Marc and Karen. I just wish there had been more scenes of them together trying to work their way through the mystery.

I liked and enjoyed the story, even though it was too heavily skewed to romance. The mystery aspect needed more development and as Robin said earlier, 50 more pages would have made this meatier.

I liked Marc's character and admired Karen after her confrontation with Clancy in her apartment. I even liked them as a couple, their escalated romance not withstanding.
